300 Win Mag scope help

Just received word that Wayne will be finishing up my CZ550 .300WM Upgrade #2 package this week and shipping back to me. Looking forward to shooting it.

Making final decisions on scopes now. I'm leaning towards a Z6, trying to decide illuminated or not.

My Z6 1-6 is illuminated and personally love it. More so for quick acquisition of target. Longer slower shooting opportunities you can do without it.

I think illumination is well worth it. It helps with quick shots as well as shots in less than ideal light. Dark crosshairs on dark coloured target against dark vegetation can be difficult to see at times. For hunting at night under moonlight it’s great help too.

If there is a leopard hunt, or bush pig hunts in your future, an illuminated reticle may make a lot of sense

That .300 may also work quite well at first or last light with an illuminated reticle on withe-tailed deer in deep and dark eastern woods

Finally, with a 130 gr TTSX load, that .300 with an illuminated reticle may also be quite a rig for night predator hunting, in Africa or USA, where legal

Considering the modest price difference, I would say that it is worth taking the illuminated reticle, even if you do not use it often...

Good question, and One-Day: excellent and informative reply. While moderate power on a hunting scope has always done me well, I do know that the long range shooters at booths at SCI have told me that for most of their very long shots their scopes are on 22 power. Ended up mounting a spare Z3 3-9x36 with #4 reticle just to shoot her before the Z6 1.7-10x40 arrives (assuming I win it in our SCI chapter silent auction next month.....). Fit with room to spare. The rifle weighed in at 10.3lbs with a full mag, within 2 oz of my 375 on the same action with a Z6i 1-6EE. Definitely not a mountain rifle, but should be amazingly comfortable to shoot.

Was it necessary to mount it high to clear the bolt handle?

I'm honestly not sure what height those rings are. They're a factory steel set I had laying around. It cleared the bolt with no problem, but the ocular is quite slim on that scope vs my Z6i 1-6.

My 308 Norma is very similar and I can shoot it all day long. It's a fine setup

Thanks to Warpig602 I have a nice Leupold VX5HD 3-15x illuminated on my 300WM Tikka and my Kimber 243. My primary reason (besides having rather ancient eyes) is for load workup/testing. I rarely have cranked up over 6x for big game hunting. The one exception that comes to mind is the 90 yard shot on a croc.
Even 400+ yards on antelope a 6x is quite adequate. Long range coyote and tiny PD hunting I’ll admit I have cranked up scopes to higher power.
Just holding a rifle steady on a tripod with more than maybe 8x makes the slightest movement seem large.

Afternoon, all.

Planning to send a CZ 550 300 Win Mag to Wayne at AHR after our rifle season is over here for his package 2 tune up. Looking to put some better glass on it when it gets back. Thoughts on Swarovski Z5 vs Z6? I know the obvious of zoom range and 1" vs 30mm tube, but any noticeable difference in clarity? This is going to be an all around rifle (whitetail, elk, plains game, etc). I'm not much into long range shooting. I'm waxing and waning between the Z5 2.4-12x50 and the Z6 2-12x50. I've a Z6i 1-6 on a 375 which I love, I'm just not sure the illumination will be worth the price increase for me given the intended uses of this rifle.

I can only say that I love the Z8’s that I have. I am not sure of the difference between Z6 and Z5. This is one great thing about going to the SCI Convention. You get the chance to speak to all these companies face to face and ask questions such as yours. It really helps me to decide before I plunk down some hard earned cash for new toys!

If you end up not getting the z6 they are releasing an illuminated version of the z5 in the next month or 2. I have a z5 2.4-12x50 and love it.

Well, she certainly shot well today. This was factory Hornady Whitetail 150's I had bought for another rifle a while back. I was planning to just shoot it up for the brass, but might let one fly at a whitetail this year?? Shot at 100yds off of a Caldwell rest. I was able to maintain 4" at 100 off of sticks following that for 5 shots. Offhand.....lets just say I need more work at 100 on offhand, more like 12".

Loaded up some 165gr TTSX's over RL-22 (70, 72, 74gr) and Fed 215M's in Hornady brass for next weekend. Hoping they shoot as well as the 150gr Interlocks from last round.

I have 2 of the Z5 2.4-12x50 BT models. One is on a Sako 338 win mag and one on a custom 20inch 308. Both will be heading to South Africa in 2020. You cant go wrong with either of your choices. The differences in them to me was so minor I went with Z5 to save some money.

Hi, would you mind telling how that scope is going. If you see above post I am after something as a versatile hunting scope and that might be worth considering . They all are worth considering this might fit my idea of versatile too.

Hi Chris,
The Z6 is holding up quite well. I like the zoom range. It's held zero over the 60 or so rounds Ive put through it since settling on the 165gr TTSX over 72 gr RL22. I don't really twist turrets, so no experience there.
