Are many people taking the .30-378 Weatherby to Africa for the larger plains game animals?
We have been working on a line of ammunition for this caliber and I am impressed with the incredible velocity and accuracy we have been able to achieve.
But I also wonder how popular this caliber is with the safari hunting community.

The 180 Gr Swift Sirocco II bullets shot sub 1/2 MOA at 3275 FPS which is faaaast.

One of the rifles I most regret selling was my 30-378 weatherby. It’s basically the 30 cal 257 wby, point and shoot to any reasonable hunting distance. Plan on getting another one soon ish. Have yet to go on a safari but I wouldn’t hesitate to bring one if I had it. Maybe I’m the only one though.

I was loading 215 Bergers at 3175 out of a 26” barrel with I think with N570. 180’s I think are too light to take advantage of the massive case capacity, you hit pressure too soon and end up with a not very full case. Bump up the weight and use slower powders and you can get minimal velocity loss but with much higher BC bullets and heavier payload on target.

For African fame I think a 200gr accubond would be a great bullet. Higher BC than the 180’s and still at Mach Jesus, probably 3150-3220 if I had to guess

I like that caliber. I had one shot well. Then sold it. Thought i will buy another one. That never happened. But did buy a 338-378. It does fill the 30-378 and gives me 338 results.it is a 5000 ft/lb cartridge with very resonable velocity. How ever i hav not shot it in yesrs. Bigbores have consumed my time.

I know someone who had a Weatherby Mark V Accumark in .30-378 Weatherby magnum in Africa. I don't have a huge experience with it, because I only killed a kudu bull with this caliber.
The first time, the ammunitions were reloaded with Somchem S385 powder, and Sierra Game King 180 gr, but I don't know what was the muzzle velocity ?
Later, I used it a bit again and this time, it was loaded with Hornady Interlock 220 gr but I don't know what powder was used ?
The owner's son told me this caliber hit animals like the lightening at short range but no personnal experience because I shot my kudu at 216 meters with the Sierra.
Nice rifle, but for classic walk and stalk hunting, I prefered the .30-06.

If I had to use this caliber again, I would prefer to use something tougher like a lead free bullet or a bonded bullet.

I know they hunted a lot of animals with this caliber but now the rifle is not in good shape. A cartridge blew up in the chamber and the bolt is completely frozen. They haven't brought it to the gunsmith since the accident and the rifle is still sleeping in the safe.

Years ago I owned a rifle caliber 300 RUM, but I don't have a great opinion about such cartridges because I am not sure that they will fully perform in the classic rifles that we use for hunting. The cartridge 30-378 Weatherby Magnum has the same case as the cartridge 460 Weatherby, which is not very popular and considered overpowered by many, where by it the ratio of caliber to case is much more balanced than by the cartridge 30-378 Weatherby Magnum.

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
