Crocodiles wreak havoc on district, kill child

NYAKABANGO residents in Muleba District, Kagera Region, have been warned against allowing their children to go alone to Lake Victoria shores to swim or draw water following an increase in crocodile attacks.

Nyakabango Councillor, Pastory Gwanchele told the ‘Sunday News’ in an interview that a seven- year-old boy, Ibrahim Festo, was attacked and killed by a huge crocodile last Wednesday at about 8.45am.

According to him, a group of about six children had gone to the lake to fetch water, but the crocodile attacked and dragged the unsuspecting boy from the shore.

I immediately reported the matter to Muleba District Commissioner, Richard Ruyango, who dispatched a team of game officers and together we mounted a massive operation.

We managed to kill one of the crocodiles on Friday morning. However, he said when they killed it they did not find the body of the missing boy.

This shows that there could be several crocodiles, which have escaped from Rubondo National Reserve, he said.

He noted further it was the sec-ond incident to happen at Katembe Village. In 2008, a Standard Six girl from Nyakabango Primary School was also killed by a crocodile in similar circumstances.

For his part, Kemondo Councillor, Alhaj Atwib Kayoza said about three people were attacked by the crocodiles.

A Form Four student from Kagondo Secondary School in Muleba District, Jovina James (18), was seriously wounded after she was attacked by a crocodile recently.

She died a few hours later while receiving treatment at Kagondo Mission hospital, he said. Bukoba District Commissioner Deodatus Kinawiro said he had also received reports and sent condolences to the family of Jovina.

I have received with great shock the news of the death of the young student,” he said. Muhutwe Councillor, Justus Magongo led hundreds of mourners at the funeral of Jovina at her parents home village, Irundu.

This is a sad incident. The nation has lost a school girl. She was among the bright students in her class,” he noted. Following the incidents, people have been told to take precautions by not allowing children to go alone on the lake shore.

Meanwhile, Yustace Ludovick (43) from Mafumbo Village in Muleba District was on Thursday convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment and ordered to compensate the traumatised girl 100,000/-.

Before passing the judgement, Muleba District Magistrate Asha Mwatindwa denounced the behaviour of the accused, saying such an act contributed to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/Aids.

Very sad about children being killed by croc and absolutely infuriating about the rape of a child by a grown man!

what the hells up with the officials, a simple 4"x4" square hole fence with 2 feet above the water with posts every 4-8 feet with small bells on the top of the fence would warn the people some thing big was trying to get in the enclose. it could be 20 feet by 30 feet for getting water- washing close . I would pay for one my self, I am going on another hunting trip in Africa this june-july.

Exactly! Children never know what is out there

So sad really. A simple barrier could have prevented this tragedy.

I’m not trying to be glib, but the problem is that the locals would most likely dismantle the fence to use the materials for a different use.

I asked a PH who hunts the lower Zambezi what percent of crocodiles have eaten people. His response, 100%. They may not have killed a human, but probably have gotten a morsel when the body was torn up.

He has had some hunters who want to eat croc. When a femur, bracelet or clothes are removed from the body after shooting one, the menu changes.

Eesh, I would guess so!

When I get to be King...........the guilty parties............two legs or four, will be shot..........................FWB

What Flatwater Bill said +1.

+ they should feed the rapist to the crocs! Sort of like a public hanging.

Life on the frontier.
Bet ya a $$ bounty on the head of each croc killed would change the odds somewhat. Plus the benefit of all the meat to eat.
Maybe the poachers would reform and shoot crocs rather than other critters.

Why do you want to put bounties on crocs or shoot them all? They are simply doing what they evolved into millions of years ago.....it happens all the time so not sure why the news papers and officials make it seem like its some new big thing......crocs are beneficial to river systems etc.....the local people living on rivers.and lakes know there are crocs there but don't change their behaviour when someone gets taken......someone who works for us brother was taken over week ago....there is a fishing ban at this time of the year but he was out on the river at night fishing illegally. ......no remains have been found so do you want every croc in the area shot?.....I am not being hard or unsympathetic. ....just realistic.......

They, like other African creatures, simply see them as just another food source and to start gunning down any species who eats or stomps natives would mean that all kinds of vultures would be kept pretty busy.

It is somewhat mind boggling that 100% of all crocks have tasted human.

Crocs were here long before any humans so they really can't be demonized. People have realize that they are not at the top of the food chain in many places.

you would think the natives would want to keep there loved one safe when they were getting water and other activies near or in the waters edge,, and it does not take to many smarts to figure out a way to keep them safe and a simple fence would do that. and any one caught screwing with or taking the fence should be thrown into the middle of the river.

Sometimes common sense evades many.

People were getting taken by crocs near our place on Lake Tanganyika. More prevalent during the rains when the stream would break its banks and flood the swamp area.
We built a bridge.
People are still taken yearly due to them still wanting to cross the swamp instead of using the bridge. You can decide on why...

I am often asked to kill crocs and I do for the safety of my fish farm workers and cage dive teams, but when asked to kill a “maneater” I always think twice about the backstory.
I will and have, but it is a shame and a waste.

This!

The western mindset and the African mindset have areas where they just don’t intersect.

In this example the “why” is unanswerable to the western mindset.

Asking “why” is unanswerable to many with the African mindset.

Divergent views makes the world an interesting place, with many “why’s”.

a good many years ago here there was large bear that was killing a farmers pigs and trying to get into the house late at night and the game wardens offered all kinds of options that didn,t work. the farmers having firearms, dug a hole for mr bear and gave him a 3006 behind the ear. and did the S-S-S. shoot, shelvel and such up.

Well, forgive my ignorance! The opening of this thread led me to believe that a croc eating children was a bad thing, so I suggested a way to address that. Some later posts have enlightened me and I now formally withdraw my suggestion to kill crocs to save kids.

Maybe the balance of nature does provide a natural population control and is the way things are and should be.

nothing to forgive, I too thought the children were more important than croc,s.. animal lives over human lives is sick. and whats the waste about killing a animal that takes children and adults? killer elephants, cats and buffalo are hunted down and killed like they should be, so whats special about croc,s? they and not a endangered species, for heaven sakes they are raised and killed for meat, belts, shoes and hand bags for the ladies.
