Good Gun Deals This Week

At auction in France, a whole load of vintage revolvers and other handguns:

Including an interesting Charles Lancaster over-and-under pistol in .455.

Paul Roberts used to make a living buying up job lots of revolvers and shipping them across the Atlantic: I don't know whether he still does it, as firearms law in France has probably added delay and expense.
He’s also greatly disliked in India for plundering all the English rifles from there lol.

A Cogswell & Harrison in .375 H&H, estimate £400-800 ($530-1,060).

As always, get a condition report and especially check the condition of the bore.
Interesting to me for the price. looks to have some pitting on the bolt, so the bore must be checked. It has a side safety, and a H&H sidemount. Looks like it has a peep sight.

Winchester Model 70 Compact Classic in 308 Winchester - yesterday afternoon I stopped by BPS Outfitters in Sherman, Texas to look around, and one of their guns on consignment was a New Haven era Model 70 Compact Classic in 308 Winchester (walnut and blue steel) with a glossy Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40 with an asking price of $899. Both wood and metal looked to be in really good condition, and some decent grain in the stock. I've bought from BPS a couple times in the past, and they're good to deal with. Seems like a decent deal for the buyer who wants one, and I know that they will negotiate pricing within reason.

PS - my apologies that I didn't think to grab a picture in the moment, but I'm confident they would send you some. :-)

Maybe because Wayne has retired and therefore price is going up. His custom work is now done by Matrix gunsmithing. I have heard Tim there does an excellent job btw, probably even better as per some opinions.

My opinion is exactly the opposite. I know at least 3 members who have had sub-par work done by Matrix. This may have changed now that he is not battling illness, but on the used market how do you know which you’re getting?

Correct, and at some point soon the used rifles will be selling for as much as the new ones. I saw two AHR big bores listed online recently for $15K each. Thats what they would cost new. So maybe we're already there.

They are worth it. I have three, one in 505 Gibbs, one in 375 H&H ready to upgrade, and one in 500A2 from Wayne. The one from AHR is very nice, but there are several rifle makers that can upgrade my 375 H&H for me. Buy a lightly used one for cheaper, and then send it to a pro.

I was quoted $7500 for a complete custom .500j from Wayne right before he stopped taking orders.

For the ones I looked at some time ago, I did speak with him and sent him pictures and videos. He confirmed that they were his work and seemed quite positive about them.
As for whether they perform as expected in the field or at the range, I suppose that is always a risk when buying a firearm, even after an inspection. You can inspect the workmanship and condition, but you cannot necessarily establish how it will shoot or perform under actual use. That is why I think a three-day inspection period is all the more important. It gives the buyer some opportunity to assess what they have purchased, although, of course, it cannot eliminate every risk.

France = Nightmare and every exporter wants a king's ransom !

Think that was what CZ called them - would love the stock for my 505 Gibbs but alas in USA - not Europe

Not sure that is a Kevlar stock but it does appear to be a McMillan one.
So McMillan do stocks for the Magnum 550 - good to know - solves the problem I have !

Noah,
I might be interested in the 470 Woodleigh Softs if the price is right for the entire lot. Are you planning on going to the Tulsa Gunshow in November? If so, perhaps we could meet up.
