I am 72 with bad knees, in fact I am 10 weeks out on my third knee surgery on the same knee. So if I aim going to kill my cow elk for the freezer, I need to shoot one very close to the trail or in a place where I can drive my 4 runner right up to it. Backpacking it is no longer an option for me.
My neighbor lets me shoot elk on his hay field if I want to and actually it is about the only place around here where I can kill an elk and retrieve it without asking someone for help. I have not seen an elk on his place since August. The weather changed from hot and sunny to cold , foggy and raining this morning, so I drove past his field and I could hardly believe my eyes, there were 2 small herds of elk on his place right where I could very easily have shot one from either herd. It was the perfect setup for a guy like me. All I had to do was get out of my vehicle and shoot one.

But for the first time in my life , I could not bring myself to shoot one even though it was the perfect opportunity for me. They were just standing there looking at me in the early morning fog. They looked so innocent , I just could not shoot one. This is the first time in my life I have ever felt that way. It was quite a strong feeling too, hard to describe . Maybe it would have just been to easy, or maybe I didn't feel the urge to butcher one in the rain or maybe I felt it might chronic wasting like the one I got last year. I don't know what it was, but I hope it is the last time I get overcome by this feeling.

It really doesn't matter what it boils down to, Sir. You are a hunter, and not a killer. I have had various animals in my crosshairs and thought, "I got you Buddy! I got you!" Then I watched them walk, jump, scamper away. Each and every time that has happened, I counted that as a good day's hunting and thanked God for letting me have it. I'm glad you had a good day, as well.

I understand the feelings you had. I get the most enjoyment out of guiding my grandchildren than I do pulling the trigger myself. I have allowed many deer to walk past me in the last few years. There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeling that way.

One of the best stalks of my entire life was on a Pronghorn that I ended up letting walk because he wasn’t quite mature enough. I couldn’t quite get the best look at him in the spotting scope but thought he might have been a shooter. After one of the most enjoyable/challenging stalks I have ever done, I made it into a spot and pulled up on him with my rifle, he wasn’t quite what I wanted and I just let him walk on by. But it was still everything I could have hoped for in a stalk and sometimes that’s all you need in a hunt.

I have that happen from time to time... I'm fine with it when it happens. Trigger time is only a few seconds of the day in the outdoors...

I’m betting that if you set off from home with the intent to go shoot an elk, it woulda happened. The fact that it fell into your lap made it feel somehow unearned.

My thoughts.

Hell, I could be as far off base as possible.

Every person and every hunting situation is different. "I will let thee walk" has crossed my lips many times.

I let two cows walk this morning at 28 yards, partly because I was really enjoying the first day hunting in snow and partly because I’m a lazy bastard today and didn’t feel like messing with everything that comes after the arrow is released.
Don’t sweat it, you will get another shot.

I think we all have days like that at times, I know I do. Sometimes it's not about the hunting or killing. Sometimes it's just about the enjoyment of being in the bush and appreciating magnificent animals be they a humble rabbit, a pride of lions or anything in betwixt.

I could have shot a big elk on a Mexican coues hunt for reasonable money. We were in the truck and they were just standing there at about 100 yards, a slam dunk. That was the problem: it was too easy, and would have felt like shooting a cow. I just couldn’t have put it on my wall. I have no regrets.

The stalk is the main thing for me. I love pitting my expertise against a worthy opponent on his own turf, trying to think like he does and outmaneuvering him. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I have tipped my hat to a good buck and wished him well as he flashed that big tail and bounded off. That day it just didn't feel right to take a life. There would be other days and maybe the same old guy.

My wife had 9 doe all cruise by her blind last weekend... our goal this year is to fill the freezer.. neither of us are really hunting horns/antlers.. she didnt take one until late on Sunday, leaving me to clean a deer until just before dark lol.. When I asked her why she waited and passed in the morning and evening saturday and then again in the morning on Sunday... she said she was just enjoying being there.. and preferred to watch the deer eat and play.. she knew theyd still be around the next day... so.. she let them walk..

You just didn´t feel like pulling the trigger, fine.

Proves you are a hunter, not a killer.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.
