Safari Hats

A stiff brimmed hat is a perfect POS for traveling by air - even in business. I love my Rands, but if I can't drive, they tend to stay home. This is the Baron model of the type made for Robert Redford in "Out of Africa" minus the puggaree wrap (would have been almost as bad as a zebra hat band). What better place to wear it than - well - Africa. However, it was a pain in the land cruiser and the airplane however well it performed its dedicated function in the field.

Several years ago I discovered that Tilley made a cotton canvas hat. However effective they may be, I hate the look of most of their brimmed hats - one looks like a NGO bureaucrat loose in the bush. But the canvas hat quickly takes a pinched crown, drooping brim look which is effective at its primary purpose, rolls up in a carry on, and looks much more like the property of Stewart Granger than a UN consultant wary of soiling his boots.

I want the Baron hat so bad! Too rich for my blood right now though. Glad I'm not the only one who would wear it these days!

This hat disappears in your luggage. I can wear it anywhere without looking joe hunter.

That being said, it has travelled with me to several places in the last few years and I've never worn it. I tend wear my favorite Sitka ball caps or $10 Puma ball caps from Costco.

And once they measure you, I mean every contour, they have that exact measurement for any future one.

Ah meh … Baseball caps are a thing.

The Cool Kids on safari wear them.

I wear the hell out of my kuiu boonie hat you sent the link to. Great hat.

Even though I wear a baseball type cap most of the time when outdoors, I've had a couple of "pre-cancerous" spots taken off of my ears.

I wear brimmed hats when hunting Africa.

The "goober dude" which was given to me by my father and mother many years ago (Willis & Geiger), bought at the Abercrombie & Fitch store in Phipps Plaza in Atlanta in the early 80's :

Yeah, I know...

Or the Dunn's that I bought for myself, in the early 2000's:

The Willis & Geiger is a much better hat.

Maybe I should just embrace the "goober dude" factor of the zebra skin band. (Dang, I'm 61. I have T-shirts older than my kids)

Why should I care about what anyone else thinks???

Hi,

I don´t know a best general hunting hat than the Filson Packer. Looong lasting, light enough, small enough breathable waxed heavy weight cotton. Not totally crushable but can be put flat into a day pack. The fabric is strong enough to protect the head. Not a small issue!
I am on my 2nd one. The first one is now with my eldest son!!

I think calling that Filson cotton breathable is a bit of a stretch. I had one and don’t wear it anymore. I still have one of the waxed cotton caps I wear duck hunting and any temp above about 50 and my head is a sweat factory.

Hi Russ,

Agree in some way. I say "general hunting" because for really hot and tropical weather there are better hats of course.

I’ve had a Filson Packer hat since the 1980’s and it’s perfect…for a very narrow range of temperatures. Below 35-40F it’s not warm enough. Above 50-55F I’m sweating like crazy. It gets some use, but I wouldn’t take it to Africa.

Another tip with those. Don’t sweat through them and then leave them n your dash in the sun. I did and mine actually shrunk to the point that I can’t wear it.

Agree about this shrinking thing! I bought my first Filson Packer the correct size...unused! But after some use it shrunk! So, for my next and actual one, I ordered une size bigger. Done! After some serious use it fits my perfect!

I have a kangaroo skin outback Aussie style hat that I wore A LOT. It shrunk really bad and I have no idea why. It’s so small now that I can’t wear it. Even the amount of rise in the sides of the brim changed as it shrunk. Damn I liked that hat. I tried several ways of stretching it back out, nothing worked.

Put it in a plastic bag in and throw it in the freezer for a week. Should be much better.

I tend to prefer the fedora style hat. I switch between this hat and a baseball cap. This hat is a replica of the hat worn by Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark. It is made out of beaver fur felt. I wear it on the plane and store it in the overhead while flying. A few people over the years have recognized it as the Indian Jones hat.

The cotton has actually shrunk like a t shirt that went through the dryer. Fits my brother well now though.

Thank you for the LIKE on my old post. It brought back memories as I lost her a year and a half ago, at 18+ years.
