Talk to me about German Shorthaired Pointers

A GSP is the same as any breed. Don’t buy a dog breed that is smarter than you are.

I’m in trouble then… a half wit squirrel with a traumatic brain injury is smarter than I am :D

My beautiful German Shorthaired Pointer is named Dago. We took him to hunting training, but he doesn't like the noise of gunshots or thunderstorms. Even so, I kept him because he's such a great companion. My daughter plays with him without any problems. He's energetic and very athletic, obedient and strong. He's a great dog. Greetings from Córdoba, Argentina.

Meet “Mauser” (my wife might not be the most creative with names lol)…

IMG_0661.jpeg

He’s already taken possession of a dozen toys and decided my wife isn’t allowed to leave the room without his permission and an escort lol

He didn’t appreciate being kenneled last night… lots of howling and barking… but he’s adjusting amazingly well for the first night and morning… he’s already bonding, unafraid, and running around and enjoying himself… I expected 2-3 days of him missing momma, being apprehensive, etc… but that’s not happening at all… he just runs, plays, poops, and sleeps lol

Congratulations!

My all time favorite bird dog.

I will add to this. I grew up hunting with English pointers and English setters. I also had a cocker as a kid that was ok with quail. My last bird dog was a small female GSP. She was a wonderful dog, and lived on the couch... Was well trained and well mannered. Unless you were a squirrel on the fence.

She did have separation anxiety and i ended up with a companion for her so she wouldn't howl when I was at the office during the day. I took her about everywhere with me.

They can be highly energetic. But are loyal and great pets. I also love Australian Cattle Dogs. Another energetic bread ..

But I may seriously consider an English Cocker when the time comes.

Keep us posted. I don't think you will be disappointed, as long as you keep her busy. If not, the outcome may not be to your benefit.

Beautiful pup, congratulations on your new family member. Please take more pictures and post them. I'm sure I'm not the only one who loves to see puppy pictures. :D

I have/had three GSP's in my life. In my 20's I had a female and now in my 40's I have two GSP's a male and a female. My wife and I absolutely love our dogs as they are house broken and live in the house with us. We live on 80 acres so they also get the country life of getting to roam (not too far) or off the property.

I love their personalities but also how much they love attention and affection. For me I don't think I would own another breed.

Congrats Dave, nice looking boy. You should start place training right away with him, it will make your life easier and a way to tell them to calm down when they get rowdy. Hope to meet him one day in person

Nice pup! I have a wire haired pointing griffon he's no dog prodigy, but he finds birds and hunts close. Good for me I have both hips replaced.

Nice addition! If you gun dog train him…make sure it’s with someone who has worked with a number of pointers. They don’t typically take well to force fetching like labs do…Once the damage is done it’s hard to bring em back to proper fetching and recall if you ever need him to work for you. Happy to talk more pointers

Congratulations on your puppy, Enjoy!

Awesome! Good on ya and the better half. They are great dogs.

I have hunted over numerous GSPs. Great working dogs. I have never owned one. Their owners are deeply devoted to them. I have owned two Vizslas, very birdy and great family and in-home pets. They have no undercoat, so the cold is not their friend, but they seem to enjoy their vest and a sweater outside the field. Good Times

My 26 year old son and his wife were given a "gun-shy" GSP.

The dog (female/spayed) was so high-strung, that they ( 2 very outdoorsy people) just couldn't control it.

It had been trained by one of the best dog trainers in GA, but, ultimately, they couldn't control it.

My daughter-in-law got pregnant, and they decided to return it to the trainer (who, thankfully took it back).

The GSP got aggressive with another dog and caused $600 worth of stitches in less than 10 seconds (I witnessed it).

They couldn't risk it with a baby.

I think that a GSP could be a great hunting dog, but based on the one that I dealt with, they need to be very active.

Mauser is adjusting well... basically plays, runs, sleeps, eats, and poops... 24/7/365... lots of energy in this little guy...

Rather than crating him all day, I've got a littler 4' square play pen that we're letting him screw around in, in my office while Im working..

Last night was the easiest so far with kenneling him at night... hes got no separation anxiety that we can see.. its all protest.. but he howels and barks and whines for HOURS when we try to put him to bed.. last night was the easiest night to date.. he bitched for about 20 minutes when we first put him in the kennel for the night.. then he slept for about 3 hours.. woke up and bitched a little so we let him out to pee.. he came back in and complained a short while, but then went back to sleep and stayed down another 3 hours... after that my wife got up, made coffee, and played with him for an hour or so then took him on a morning walk..

Im hoping we can get him to just go in the kennel and sleep through the night within the next couple of weeks..

its like having a baby in the house all over again

Your kennel training now will pay off for his whole life. As you know Mauser will shortly view the kennel as his safe space.

When they’re very young, I always went out in the field or woods and waited till they were distracted and ranged too far from me to play, and I would hide on them.

Once they notice your missing. Which may take a while it stresses them out, thinking their lost. Do it enough and they will learn to check back in routinely and not range too far.

GSP are no different than any other breed. A lot of piss poor breeding going on. ruining them.

Breeding bad temperament and or physical traits.

German Shepherds, Dobies, on and on have gotten bad reps over the decades from people breeding inferior traits.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
