@SStomcat , looks like you have made up your mind about changing from your initial 1-6x24 choices to a 1.5-8x42 (or similar).

Very good choice. It is what I would have recommended as well. I don’t know if you have made up your mind about exact brand and model, but do keep an eye out for second hand Swarovski Z6i. They sometimes become available just around 1000-1250€ . That’s probably the finest all round hunting scope you can buy, without paying stupid prices like for the very similar Z8i.

Looking forward to seeing the completed rifle. Cheers

I am not sure if the fellow who made the comment ever used one or was just commenting. I would go with the leupold.
Not sure whom the fellow you refer to is but I have mounted, or still have mounted on rifles, and compared EVERY model mentioned side by side along with the 1-6 models in the original post without regard to anything other than mechanical/optical specs, not perception.
Swarovski Z8I 1.7-13.3x42.
Swarovski Z6I 1.7-10x42
Leupold VX-6HD 2-12x42

Sir, I'm not disagreeing with you and I'm no scope expert by a long shot, but I listen to people, encourge diverse opnions and then decide what is best for me :)
I'm also listing suggested retail prices before taxes for the ones you have listed so it is helpful for everyone because it is also an import element of the puzzle.

Swarovski Z8I 1.7-13.3x42. $ 4449
Swarovski Z6I 1.7-10x42 - Disontinued new Z8i 1-8 24 Price is $3399
Leupold VX-6HD 2-12x42 - $2199

I had a budget of ~ 1K.

Actually I think the Z6i is dis-discontinued, or brought back. Listed for 2000€

I received my Meopta today, and I was honestly blown away. Since I had recently looked through a Swarovski Z8i in both the 1.7–13.3x42 and 1–8x24, those were still fresh in my mind.
The illuminated reticle, clarity, light gathering, superior glass quality, exceptional light transmission in low-light conditions, and precise, repeatable mechanical tracking were, to my eyes, more than comparable to the Swarovskis.
The Czechs make some very good stuff, and their M2 line is no exception. At the price point, I’m genuinely impressed with what they’ve managed to put together. Good stuff.
Just to be clear, this is solely my personal opinion based on my own experience. I have no affiliation with Meopta, Swarovski, or any other optics brand.

I’d have bet my bottom dollar on precisely this reaction. Enjoy the scope!

Sorry, I somehow missed that. Congratulations, at that NIB price point the Meopta you have would be next to impossible to top.
No worries all good. I’m not into long range shooting and hunting for switch the Swaro&S&B might be better option for some ..

They dont make them like that anymore. You are fortunte to have them. What is your load for RL-17 if you do not mind sharing?

Thanks, yes, worked up some very nice loads.

Max safe proof loads in my rifles:

New old stock W-W and R-P brass cases
300gr A-Frames, Partitions and BBW #13 solids
81grs RL-17
CCI-250 or FED-215 primers
Velocities:
300gr A-Frames and Partitions 2680 fps
300gr CEB #13 solids 2700 fps
Extremely accurate
Cases fall from chamber
Easy extraction
Primer pockets reamain tight after four firings of five segregated test cases.

I have found no difference in velocity OR accuracy using both W-W and R-P brass as well as either FED-215 or CCI-250 primers.

With these max safe test loads I placed rifles and ammunition out on a 20' JD batwing cutter to bake in 100 degree heat, the ammo and rifles were so hot you could barely hold them in your hands to load and fire the rifles, I have no testing equipment and these loads were extrapolated by the burn rate of RL-17 as compared to the 4350's and 760 powder, RL-17 is not a temp stable powder, hence the extreme heat test measures.

All that said, and after safe testing was done, with also getting extreme accuracy I backed all loads down too:

>>>>>>78.5grs RL-17<<<<<<

{All 300gr bullets now clock 2600-2625 fps with the same great accuracy.}

With RL-17 now largely unavailable, I worked up new loads with 6.5 Staball powder in a 115 count old last load out bag of W-W brass cases.

I FL sized them, cleaned primer pockets, ran through tumbler to clean, trimmed all to uniform length, then ran them through the Ugly Annealer.

This load on five times fired W-W brass:

300gr Partitions
80grs 6.5 Staball
FED-215's
VEL 2588 fps

Same extreme accuracy
VERY temp stable, dense, easy loading ball powder.

These are my utility loads for the great 375 H&H's as the brass will be thrown away after they are hunted out and fired, six firings is more than enough to get your moneys worth on any higher pressure hunting cartridge cases, I even gave 'em a little extra love by putting blue green primer sealant over the primers in case that old fixed 4X scoped Model 70 Winchester ever made it's way to Alaska for a great coastal bear hunt ; ]

Thank you! Great POV, and you certainly have put in your due diligence with the load development for your rifle.
I recently bought a pack of Barnes Vortex and Federal TBBC that I plan to chrono and test in my rifle. I have read from some well respected members, hunters, and PHs that, on buffalo, the TBBC has an edge over some of the other bullets, including A-Frames, so I figured it was worth giving it a shot.
I do have a few RL powders15, 19, and 22 but unfortunately I don't have RL17, so I can't duplicate your load at the moment. I've heard a lot of good things about RL17, not only in the .375 H&H, but also in the .338 Win Mag and my 9.3x62. So it may be worth picking up a few pounds and giving it a try.
I live in Texas, so I have the benefit of being able to test for temperature sensitivity when needed. I generally try to avoid Africa during the hotter summer months. If I do end up hunting in the heat, though, I figure I'm already doing some pretty serious heat training here in Houston. I walk a few miles in the peak summer months when the sun is at its brightest, carrying a 12-pound exercise rod. By the time I'm done, my outer T-shirt feels like it has become an outer layer of skin ready to peel off! :)
I've used IMR and Hodgdon 4350 and H4831 in my 9.3x62, and I'm sure I can find some comparable combinations for the .375 H&H.
So, there are still a lot of things to experiment with, and that's part of the fun. Lots of load development ahead, and I'm looking forward to it!

You're most welcome SS, you'll be set with either of those factory loads, man I'd sure pick up 8lb jug of 6.5 Staball, it's great temp stable powder and one of the best I've used in the 375 H&H magnum, you can also set a 270gr TSX on top of any of the above mentioned powder charges, zero out and be more than set for buffalo.

All that said, this thread reminded me I had that old Winchester model 70 375 H&H out of it's stock last spring, treated all metal in the stock with Johnson's paste wax in case it did make Alaska for a bear hunt, after the above post in this thread I thought, Hmmm, I best put that old rifle on the bench and see where they land in case I want to use it on Whitetails this season.

Put a fresh target box up at 100 yards, set the Garmin up to clock speeds, used the old max load with 81grs RL-17 under 300gr Partitions in new R-P brass lit with FED-215's, first shot landed just right of center line and four inches high, turned the 4X Unertl Hawk scope down a tic, fired three more rounds, they went into less than an inch in a nice round group around three inches high, Perfect! that's 300 yard point and shoot hunting and an easy 400 if you know your drops.

Those four loads clocked an extreme spread of 10 fps averaging around 2708 fps, 2703 low and 2713 high, took some pics if anyone wants to PM me a cell number to see just how hard the old 375 H&H works to please, I have never had one that wasn't a shooter, a very great and useful all game worldwide medium bore round.

1.5-6x42 Zeiss Victory.jpg

For my DG/PG .450 Dakota 76, I chose the 1.5-6x42mm Zeiss Victory and have been completely pleased with it.
A Swarovski or S&B in this class would also be excellent choices.
I prefer Talley QD rings, with some heat shrink on the throw levers (clocked to point at each other).

If solely DG, such a scope would be a bit much, so a top quality 1-4x30mm is appropriate.
Good hunting!

Few had asked and I feel appropriate to post some pictures of the rifle in this thread itself. I plan to mount the scope over the weekend. Cheers.
Lovely Dakota 76! In .375H&H? Great package! Please post photos of the mounted scope.

What about this Schmidt & Bender

1-8x24 Exos LM FD7 TMR 1cm cw BDC II-B LT / Posicon CT

Tower make it possible to make your own marks for distance, and later change them if you change ammunition. S&B is said to use more solid tube, just look at the weight difference.

How about the price with a big Turret on a DG scope? :):)
