I'm sure you are aware that Basspro allows you return the gun at your local store or refuse to accept if you for some reason do not like it. Not sure if anything has changed of late.

A number of years ago I purchased a double rifle from a Cabelas out west, had it shipped to a local Cabelas. When to pick up the gun and it looked like acid was poured on the receiver, the finish was trashed removing the case color finish. They issued me a check on the spot refund, my only loss was the 40 mile drive to the store.
 
I am potentially interested in this rifle, but the price seems a bit high to me. Maybe someone who knows better could weigh in?

Manufactured in 1956 with fancy walnut stock and a Leupold Vari-X in a Griffin & Howe mount.

You’re paying for the stock and G&H Mount.

As a Pre64 M70 Collector and someone who currently has double digit Pre64 375’s this rifle would be a pass from me. I’ve purchased original Super Grade 375’s for less money than that tribute.
Positives are the barrel has the correct sights. I’d ask for some bore and muzzle photos if possible. From the photos we can’t tell how much of the gun was pieced together or if it was just restocked. Can’t tell if the bottom metal is original, if they located SG bottom metal, etc.

Real question is what are you looking for in a rifle? If you’re looking for a pretty shooter then she’d probably fit the bill.

I agree with Mtn_Infantry comments above and would add:

Stock: Poor quality checkering and none over the grip. Terribly fitted recoil pad.
Scope Mount: Hard to tell due to lack of photos but there is a proper way to fit G&H Side Mounts. The slotted screws holding the base to the receiver are filed so that there is no slot visible on them. On the inside of the receiver the screws, where they come thru, are cut off and penned over and then polished (with rest of the raceway). One definitely would need to get photos to determine if this was done properly as if not, ie a hack job, value would be diminished (in my opinion).
Bottom metal: looks to be inside release and, if so, two options-after market or modified factory bottom metal. Could be added value if aftermarket item is of high quality known maker. If modified factory, depends on how good the job to see if no value would be deducted.
Other: Interesting checkering pattern on bolt knob (makes me believe work was done a long time ago) and also has a checkered bolt release.

One thing I have learned over the years is that what one needs to look at, and possibly what the seller does not want to show, are the areas for which there are no photos or where photos presented are of such poor quality an accurate assessment is hard to perform.

Just my .02 from a guy with 9 posts....

Okay folks, these do not have the optical clarity of a Schmidt & Bender or Swarovski 1-8x, but the Leupold doesn't cost $3,000! Even the new tougher than woodpecker lips Nightforce NX6 discounted price starts at $1,350.

For many applications, this $800 Leupold meets the required level of brightness, clarity, and ruggedness.

FYI, with illuminated center dot, I much perfer a 1x scope for brightness and clarity over any of my Trijicon or Aimpoint reflex sights. That stated, on a double rifle, I'll stick with a much smaller reflex sight. If only they could make a super-compact 1-4x scope...

I think "pretty shooter" is a fairly accurate description of what I'm looking for. I'm not quite in the tax bracket for English rifles (maybe a nice used Dakota with some upgraded wood for a steal), but I still want something of real quality. I know and love pre-64 Model 70s, but they are always a little plain. For that reason, this rifle piqued my interest with the fancy stock. I did ask for some more photos, we will see what they say. I do believe the rifle is posted as a consignment so it may depend on the owner.

You might be able to find a cheaper shooter and spruce her up with a nicer piece of wood for less money.

I’m a huge fan of Pre-64’s and think for a 1 Gun Safari it’s very hard to beat one in a 375.

A clean standard rifle with a genuinely well-done stock would have a lot more appeal than paying collector money for questionable details. A .375 Pre-64 is about as sensible as a one-rifle setup gets.
 
My go to African rifle is a pre-64 375H&H with a G&H mount and Leupold scope, so I can certainly sympathize. That said, I think you'd be overpaying for what you're getting here. Also, call me crazy but I think this light patch here would rub me the wrong way every time I looked at it... Overall, this one's a 'close but no cigar'.
