The kudu was taken June 2023 on my first ever Africa trip. NKWE Safaris in Botswana was very special. The nyala was the first animal I shot in South Africa, September 2025, while hunting with Bushman's Quiver. This was also a very memorable, enjoyable hunt. It's hard to pick only 2.

Not necessarily my 2 favourites but rather two great hunt memories!
We were looking for bushbuck in some forestry & literally walked into this nyala bull at 15 meters. He never saw us & was walking slowly in the opposite direction. I took him free hand w/o sticks & he folded on the spot. A fantastic old bull with teeth down to the gums. I do not think I will hunt another after this one!!
This one was the opposite of a quiet stalk! This big tom caracal had killed a sheep the day before & dropping the hounds at the carcass they picked up the scent after a few minutes & the hunt began! Half an hour later the cat was treed & I was able to drop him out of the tree. Great hounds, great hounds-men & a big old tom caracal. That was a fun hunt! Plus we rid the farmer of a sheep killing cat!

My first Cape buffalo. Followed by the second a few days later. And finally, a last day, last hour kudu, after a long stalk, after we’d been searching for days.

Guess I never particapated in this one before - don't have access to the device that has most of our African hunting pictures - not necessarily my favorites, but I'll share a couple from the device that's with me right now
#1 - Always enjoyed hunting with friends and especially family - the three safaris with my daughters were special - apic from one of them
#2 - something a little different - a situational photo opp. Gotta be ready and organized for them

Forgive me, but I'm going to cheat and post 3.
The first two: I could share photos of so many of the animals I took on my two trips, and I am very proud of all of them. But the two I am going to share have more than the animals - they have the two men who made it possible: owner/PH Wikus Coetzee and PH Don Laaks. I can't say enough about either man, as a hunter, PH, or person, and I hope to hunt with both men again. Every quality you could want in someone guiding you on a hunt they possess, in abundance. The specifics: Wik, 2021, a management kudu on my last night as the sun went down. .338 Marlin Express, 150 yards down a steep bluff. I had to literally sprint a couple hundred yards to catch up, Wik setting up the sticks as I huffed and puffed my way across the space between us. The other was also a sunset kudu, in really, really thick cover. Savage 99 in .300 Savage, 210 yards. We waited for him to move into an opening to give me a shot. I owe my 2 successful hunts to these two men, and every time I read about a bad experience on here I am SO thankful my first forays to Africa were entrusted to Wik and Don.
Third photo: the morning of my first buffalo hunt, 2021. Sunrise. I had been up since before 4 AM - my daughters had a HS choir concert back in Alaska and I got up to watch remotely online. As I left the chalet and saw that morning sunrise, while feeling proud of my daughters, I wondered if life could possibly be any better.
