Is that a Ruger Safari Express and in which calibre?
 
Congratulations on the buffalo and completion of another great hunt.

From the photos it looks like you didn’t use the Heym. Any reason why after the practice? Did you take anything with the double?

Welcome home, Frank, and congratulations — that's a proper old bull. Gaza up against Gonarezhou is hard, honest buffalo country and every one earned there is earned on foot. Looking forward to the blow-by-blow; the tracking is always the best part of the story.

Thx. It was exceptionally hard.

8 days around 8-10 miles a day of hard tracking and shifting winds before we got a shot on this guy.

We worked hard and were blessed to make our own luck!

Unfortunately I didn't use the Heym.

Around day 5 it became increasingly obvious that I was only going to get a few seconds for a shot in heavier than usual bush due to all the rain this year.

With that I felt that I had to be spot on with the shot and felt better using a scope on 4x than a red dot.

The Ruger RSM 416 Rigby did a wonderful job.

I did finish the buffalo and an eland both in very heavy cover with the Heym so it still played a role since my PH carried one of the two rifles for me.

Yep. 416 Rigby. I've taken around 15 animals with that rifle now in Africa.

For me, with a Timney Trigger set at 2 lbs and a good Leupold scope it really does the job on anything from Tiny Ten to Buffalo very well.

I’ve been in a similar situation. Sometimes it’s a coin toss on what to use. It’s great when they’ve got 2 trackers and one can carry the scoped rifle

They come up on Gunsinternational.com from time to time usually for a very reasonable price.

My only complaint is I wish the stock was cut thinner in the fore end and that when fully loaded it held 4 rounds rather than 3.

Yes. In part that was the problem.

There were several herds from 50 to 200+ buffalo on the concession and they kept picking up the Dagga boys in passing them which made it increasingly hard to get close to the bulls without being spotted by the herds even when the wind was good. Just too many eyes makes for challenging hunting.

We also crossed lion tracks a few times so the Buff were really on edge.

That is not an Echols rifle but a clone as it has the Echols stock and all the bells and whistles. Lon Paul who built the rifle does great work.
