Last year I posted on this forum requesting some help to plan my first ever African safari. I was overwhelmed with the amount of people that provided valuable information and advice on all things hunting Africa.

My species list chopped and changed more times then I can count, the area I wanted to hunt and of course, trying to work out how many days I would need.

At the the start of 2026 I booked a 10 day safari in Kwazulu natal, hunting all free range low fence properties where I managed to harvest a kudu, nyala, waterbuck, bushbuck, common reedbuck, blesbuck and zebra.

An incredible expierence that I certainly won’t forget any time soon.

Dandy bushbuck and waterbuck, good on you for going over!! Do you have thoughts of returning for a 2nd trip? If so, any particular animal you'd most like to hunt?

Thanks mate, the eastern cape has caught my attention for a gemsbok and eland, maybe a lechwe and few others!

wow what a beautiful bushbuck, Sounds like you picked a great spot to hunt. I need to get to SA to hunt a Bushbuck in the mountains.

If you do go to EC, I would not recommend hunting Oryx or lechwe there. Oryx are not native and priced higher for a lower on average quality. Compared to Kalahari areas and especially central Namibia. You should check out Namibia if you have a hankering for a nice bull oryx!

You’re correct in that lechwe aren’t native to anywhere in South Africa. They were introduced years ago however and you can get some very good trophies here. The Eastern Cape is a very diverse province, the most biodiverse area in all of Africa, and gemsbok are in fact native to the Karoo region of the Eastern Cape. Are the genetics comparable to Namibia, likely not on average, but some excellent trophies are hunted in the Karoo.
 
That Bushbuck is a coarker! The best African trophy on your first Safari! Damn straight.

That sounds like an incredible first safari. You put together a great species list too, especially for a free range, low fence hunt.

Ten days was probably a good call as well enough time to enjoy the experience without feeling like you have to rush from one animal to the next.

Kudu, nyala, waterbuck and bushbuck on the same trip is a seriously good way to start hunting Africa. I can understand why you’re already thinking about the next one.

What species are starting to creep onto the list for round two?

Thanks mate, was an incredible experience. Eland, red lechwe, gemsbok, mountain reedbuck, springbok and impala next trip I think

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
