I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I am a native South Carolinian, residing in the Northern Piedmont region of the state. My interest in firearms has ebbed and flowed over the years as to just what shooting discipline garnered my attention at the time, but I have always been a rifleman at heart. I do still actively shoot the Sporting Clays shotgun game but my interest in finely crafted rifles, especially German, Austrian, and European bolt guns and single shot rifles is always lingering somewhere in my mind.
The above text is a portion of an introduction I recently posted for a dedicated Blaser website. I would now like to expand upon that information and include additional information about myself. I officially joined this website a few years back after being a "Lurker" for many years. The recent purchase of a Blaser R8, after decades of "brainwashing" to the absolute necessity for Mauser style CRF rifles, has generated renewed interest in all things involving Big Game hunting. My first centerfire high powered rifle, purchased as a teenager, was a Schultz and Larsen chambered in 7x61 S&H. I harvested my first Whitetail deer, back in 1979, with a Ruger 77R chambered in 358 Win. Since that time I have about run the field in regard to cartridges used for deer to include 243, 6.5X 284, 270 Win., 7X57 Mauser( one of my favorites), 280 Rem., 280 AI, 308 Win., 30-06, 300 H&H, 9.3 X 74R, 9.3 X 62, 375 H&H. 458 Lott (a bit much for me in a 7.75 lb rifle!), and I am certain I have forgotten a few along the journey. I have been an active "Hand Loader" of ammo since a teenager.
In 2012, I was very fortunate to go on my first Safari, traveling to Zimbabwe, on a fourteen day hunt. That accounted for an opportunity to harvest some exceptional trophy animals to include Kudu, Eland, Zebra, Bush Buck, and Impala. On this hunt I used a Mauser M03 chambered in 375 H&H. In 2014 I was able to return to Zimbabwe, with the opportunity to take Cape Buffalo and Warerbuck, and additional Impala. On this occasion, my rifle of choice was the Ruger No 1, again chambered in 375 H&H magnum. I hope to someday return one more time to the Dark Continent in the pursuit of Big, Dangerous Game!
I am a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving four years Active Duty, aboard a Fast Frigate out of Charleston, S.C. as a Gunners Mate. With the exception of about four years in north Carolina, I have always lived in either York, Chester, or Lancaster Counties of South Carolina. As I near retirement, I am looking forward to exploring the Blaser R8 world. There seems to be no end to the possible combinations afforded by this rifle platform and I am really looking forward to exploring all the options!
Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the hunting exploits of many of the members here and I have garnered a tremendous amount of information and insight into hunting Africa, rifles, gear, ammo, you name it. It all seems to be covered here in African Hunting! I consider the website a treasure trove of information and provides ample opportunity for the avid hunter or shooting sports enthusiast to gain knowledge about our sport. I do so look forward to future correspondence with the members here. Thank you.
