What's So Great About The 400 H&H?

So I’m laying in bed this morning for some reason thinking about the 318WR.

Then I began to wonder about which 8mm does the best replication of it, and then wondered if there’s a 375 H&H wildcat necked down to 8mm.

I bet you could make a nice round by necking up the 375 to .410 I thought after that. Well what would I call it? Obviously 400 H&H, wait a minute……..

I chuckled, I hope you do too!
For any 8mm wildcats, I would look at Colonel Charles Askins writings. He had a “thing” to say the least about 8mm wildcats and used many of them in Africa.

I am picking up my 400 H&H next week. I will soon be able to say first hand what it's like!

Except, I have buckets of .375 H&H brass... and I tried and discarded the .416 RM years ago.
You’re talking about making a .416 rem with a .006 smaller bullet though, I don’t think you’d be satisfied with that pursuit if you didn’t like the Rem.

As said - H&H went for Nostalgia and classic looks. They nailed it. Plus makes the belt have more of a purpose, that long slope and taper.

Anyone know a source of 465 barrels..?

Anything that allows me to use buckets of brass already in the shop makes me happy... like the 7.62X57, .375 WSM and .358-375 Ruger that I am rocking... it doesn't have to make sense to anyone but me.

Old thread but just wanted to chime in. I love my 416 RM but after purchasing a Dakota 76 traveler from here, With a 375H&H and 400 H&H barrels, I’ll take the 400 H&H over the RM any day. It’s made 5 trips to Africa. With the 400 H&H loaded with 400 grain No. Fork SS I’ve taken 3 buffalo, zebra, sable in Mozambique and blue wildebeest and Kudu in Botswana. With a 400 Gr NF solid I took a bull elephant while in Botswana. Both are Chronographed at 2,436 fps and extremely accurate. Recoil is very manageable. The long neck provides great next tension no crimping necessary. Best part is the rifle itself! Here are a couple of pics of recovered bullets, Buffalo, elephant and sableIMG_4694.jpegIMG_3728.jpegIMG_3691.jpegIMG_3900.jpegIMG_4052.jpegIMG_4775.jpeg

Holy Necro-Thread! …. But nice animals right there. Looks like a heck of a hunt. Congrats!

Made the mistake of talking to Duke last week.....

Thinking a 400 H&H/300H&H Parkwest Traveler.... Thoughts from the gallery?

The guys at Gulf Breeze are certainly advocates of the 400 H&H. This place is great, good info on the 400 H&H cartridge here.

Sounds perfect to me!

I have a Ruger No1 in 400H&H, it was built by T S Engineering in Brisbane, Australia, I supplied the action, and it was fitted with an Australian made .411 barrel from Sprinter barrels. It has now been fitted with a custom stock made by Brett Russouw, also in Brisbane.
After sight-in of 6 shots firing 300gr Hornady bullets designed for 405 Winchester, it produced a .9 inch group.
The next week in went .8!!
Now ti get the Atomic29 350gr copper bullets to shoot as well. These bullets were a special order from Atomic29 made by tweaking the cnc programme to make 375gr .416 bullets a little slimmer and a slightly bigger. The result was .411 diameter and by chance the came out at exactly 350grs. I have weighed all 100 and the variation is .2 gr from lightest to heaviest!!
I like my 400H&H very much!!

I think forum prohibits making reference or giving personal references to PH/Outfitters that don't advertise on this forum.

But you can call me. I would be happy to discuss Cape Buffalo .
