Ordered my LAST African Safari rifle at DSC this year...

I would need a significant refund and expedited repairs to keep the rifle. Selling it used as configured would mean having to find a buyer that never plans to sell it. Because resale value would low.

Unless there is someone out there looking for a 500 nitro that only has a left eye and a right arm :cool:

This is sad to learn. Your bespoke double isn't bespoke. Yes, I'd be very upset.

Swapping triggers right to left and reverse on a side by side shotgun or double rifle is an easy task for a competent gunsmith. The triggers being offset for a right handed shooter is not easy to repair.

Perhaps Rigby could very quickly and I mean very quickly arrange with JJ Perodeau to receive a proper set of triggers for your order, and your rifle, for his expert repair. The trouble is for your Shikari rifle Rigby will probably need to start making those proper triggers.

For a short term fix, JJ might be able to heat the triggers and bent to your left hand offset. I think they would need to be re-tempered for hardness. That would mean your rifle being shipped to and from JJ twice.

Engraving problem and not following the statement of work (order sheet)... I wonder how much of a discount Rigby will offer you as their apology?
 
Mark, I wonder if Rigby even has enough Margin to satisfy the dissatisfaction of waiting years to own 6 figure cobbled rifle.

So even if the margins are 20% which I doubt. I certainly would not take $20k to keep a rifle with very low resale value.

To me, it’s not a high value heirloom rifle. It’s a platypus.

Apology? Six figure double rifle with a two year wait and it can be fixed with a discount/refund and an apology? I think not.

Complete expedited new rifle would be my solution. But I'm sure there will be lawyers involved at some point.
 
What a pitty i uderstand you .I expect superb performance in all my doubles from my working Chapuis progress to my Army and Navy 450ne by Westley Richards or my Barella 500 465 or my Manton 360ne. I expect perfection.

This is simply horrible. After the amateurish engraving, the unwanted case colouring, now not following the specifications for a left handed rifle on a bespoke rifle, I would be furious. Especially as I cannot tell if anything big was done to correct the first two mistakes so far.

I would expect nothing but a new rifle. All of it shipped back to them at their expense. Perhaps the wood and the barrels can still be used, and it is only the complete action that needs to be replaced.

If someone wants 60K£ for a custom rifle built to your specifications, they had better deliver.
 
And there had better be a bunch of swag when it arrives the second time, for all the lost time and emotion
 
Hopefully there is a Righty somewhere about to receive your Rifle
And it’s simply a matter of switching. Which now the other persons rifle is pre owned and registered in California
 
So0 sorry to hear about the problems. Also goo that you and Rigby have developed a plan to fix it.
 
Sadly these issues are not uncommon . I personally know of English double rifles owned by the same guy which had terrible quality problems from the get go . On the first the rib on a brand new double rifle became loose within months . The second rifle couldn’t put 2 bullets anywhere near each other - not a regulation problem , rather 2 different twist rates in the barrels . The third had a significantly over bore barrel . The bullets wouldn’t stabilise . Seriously you couldn’t make this stuff up . I hope my 500NE Shikari doesn’t come with any issues . I expect it in the next 2 or 3 months .

Actually, it is neutral cast with no cheek piece which is standard Rigby. It is basically a right handed gun.

Bottom line - full refund and replacement is the only solution. Anything in-between is a cobbled together 6 figure rifle. Hardly custom at this point. Not to mention the time value of these mistakes.
This will be an interesting case study on how @RIGBY handles this - hopefully they’ll make a comment on this forum on which the are very active, and until now, respected. Hiding this under-the-rug would not be a good look IMHO.

I just talked to Jerome, it does not seem to be that simple to fix it as they'd need to replace the mechanism and then re-regulate both barrels to boot. He mentioned 2.5 to 3 months for the fix at the shop.

However, Marc Newton, the general manager, whom I had reached out to during his vacation had a better idea.

Rigby will build me a new Shikari rifle exactly as specified. I will keep using this one until the other one is ready and then do a swap. This way I am not without a rifle.

This looks like the most correct solution, let us know how it goes.
 
Everyone makes mistakes. The key is to look at it as an opportunity to learn and make the proper adjustments. If done correctly, a silver lining could be found in the form of new customers.

I am not making excuses for them. but I suspect over a single malt and late in the evening, Marc would admit the immediate demand for the rifle surprised them. Even companies with long established supply chains and dedicated expandable workforce can be hammered by unanticipated backlog. Unlike code writers and wrench turners, skilled craftsmen in an arcane product can be tough to find to address a surge requirement. Mistakes inevitably happen. The one positive is that Marc has taken quick decisive action to make it right while inconveniencing @Tanks in the least way possible.
 
Maybe the replacement comes with a different Bite ;)
