Good Gun Deals This Week

Whats the difference between 275 rigby and 275 rigby high velocity.
HV is typically the 140gr while the std is generally for the 175gr. HV’s can sometimes shoot the heavies, sometimes they won’t chamber.
I ask because i am thinking bidding on the 275 rigby at holts
If you’re serious be prepared to pay well over the estimate for just the hammer, never mind all the extras that come with importing it

The last HV that sold at Holts was over $13,000.

I think respectfully, you’re out of your element playing in a dangerous playpen. There are no deals at these auctions, only rare things for full value that cannot be found elsewhere. You’ll get an excellent education on the dozens of steps and relationships required to get a gun from the UK, out of the UK, into the US, and to your door. You’ll also pay an absolute fortune.

The problem with inexpensive guns at auction is there are fixed costs that are virtually the same for $1000 rifle as a $100,000 rifle. Thus, the less expensive rifles become much more expensive than you can calculate by the time they are delivered.

Auction estimates are teases to maximize interest, they are not the reality which is anywhere from 150% to 300% of estimate. That’s just the start of the fun.

I would recommend if you intend to buy at auction, you should set aside $15,000-$20,000. You should look at 25 weapons, bid on ten, and do whatever you can to win 3-5 of them to lower your fixed costs per unit.

I could never make the math work unless I bought and imported six arms at a time. I also had the contacts to get them refurbished or repaired. A year or two later, they were landed, repaired or refinished, and I could keep three and sell three, making the remaining ones fairly affordable through sweat equity.

This one from Holt’s back in summer of ‘24 had an auction estimate of 1500-2000 GBP. It sold for a hammer price of 6200GBP. 20% hammer premium. 22.5% VAT. 700GBP for shipping, insurance, and storage. 1000GBP for customs clearance, import engraving, and freight forwarding.

That’s 10,814 GBP, or about $14,500 not counting incidental wire charges, foreign transaction fees, and personal labor and logistics to make it all happen.

A good rule of thumb is to take the hammer price realized in pounds, double it, and that’s at least your cost in USD landed.

From what ive read you dont pay the 20% vat for foriegn sales?

But what im taking away js prolly just save a buy a new rigby

I think that one has run through numerous times without a bid. . . for good reason.

That one didn't sell the last two times it went across the block, or in the last online auction that followed...but I think its a super cool rifle. If I bought another at the auction, I would absolutely buy that gun as well. Since they dropped that reserve and starting bid, I think someone will give it a go.

It and the 275 Rigby you referenced are on my watch list for this auction. That particular 275 Rigby is interesting for sure, and is a modern build in the past several years...they list as 2019, which would make it a London's Best build. Waiting to hear if based on a Mayfair Engineering action or what. It is a pretty basic rifle for a London's Best, and one that looks cared for but well used in as many short years, with several stock bumps and bruises, so it could go very, very reasonably given the condition, and that it isn't vintage. To many, it would be viewed similar to a well used Highland Stalker. It's one you don't see often enough to have a real sense of what to expect. I can say with a level of good faith expectation, that folks will bid on that rifle and likely well above the projected range, maybe even me. LOL.

But, if you end up buying one, might as well buy several. The importation process is not rocket science, but as Rookhawk pointed out, there are costs and some minor headaches involved, if importing one single rifle, it needs to be something special (even just to you), and at least if buying multiples you can find some economies of scale. That is not always super easy at auction...wont know until it crosses the block. Depends on who shows, what catches their eyes, what else they might have bid and won before. There are things that will sell low at times, could be luck of distraction or folks there in person saw an issue the photos or hands on description did not pick up. There are some deals to be had at times at auction...but you can always end up talking yourself into something you should walk away from or at least sooner. Not every winning bidder is a fool for paying the most...but at times???

Back in my younger days before law school, all I did for a couple years was travel around the country to auto auctions buying cars for a national auto chain. Fun work, also stressful since I would often spend what seemed like a kings ransom on a daily basis, 8-10x my salary each day, and was expected to source quality inventory, but at a price that could show the targeted profit margins. All tracked and score kept, stressful fun I guess. Learned a ton. Auctions are mixed bags, deals exist, good ones, but also more areas to lose if not properly cautious and know when its time to bail.

Good luck and have fun. I sure hope someone from the US buys the Gibbs. We need more unique 338 WM rifles in these parts...but a british gun in an american cartridge that is not favored by many (compared to some) makes it a hard sell with what it takes to get it back here.

You pay the VAT. You can then file arduous paperwork not worth the trouble after import proving you weren’t subject to VAT.

I’ve never got a cent back.

I assure you, you won’t win that 275HV for the minimum bid unless you placed it within minutes of the catalog list dropping and it’s gotten absolutely zero looks from the handful of dealers who scour the auctions like this.

I personally know a couple of collectors and dealers who watch these auctions closely. They know what’s coming in advance, and many times the day a catalog posts they’re online placing bids on guns like this within the estimated range. Hundreds of them. The idea being, if something crosses the block and doesn’t get traction the auction house refers to the highest online bid(s), and in the event of a tie the first one placed (why they’re time stamped and revisions reset your time). It’s a bit of a game certain collectors/dealers play. Every once in a while (getting very rare now) they’ll get a deal that for one reason or another doesn’t get traction during the live auction. These same dealers and collectors also often attend the viewing day, or send someone in their stead to refine the list on what they should pursue in the live auction. They’re watching these auction live and bidding as well. If there’s something not moving, they’ll often hold their online bid, since they can see the high sealed bid amount and gamble they placed the bid first. These same dealers and collectors have an established network and system to ship the guns, and as such they already know their costs.

In the auction @rookhawk mentioned that was estimated at the same price (£1500-2k) and went for $14k USD, he had a friend looking at the gun and found out during the auction that was something I’d also bid on despite having 275HV from a similar period myself already. I think I tapped around £8000

I have bought a few recently and no issues with getting VAT refund from Holts or other auction houses. Other costs are meaningful and if you can get consolidated shipping that saves several hundred pounds. I have found all-in to be another 15% on top of hammer and BP.

That’s my experience as well.
I don’t know who Rookhawk has been going through but his cost estimates are greatly inflated. It isn’t that much.
Does take some time though.
I’ve bought around ten guns from British auctions and some guns from New Zealand with very little trouble.
PM me and I’ll hook you up with the importer I’ve used.

I’m about 8-10% but also typically bringing in 15-25 guns per go. I’ve had some hit upwards of 25% but it’s going to depend on the gun/manufacture year, when and where imported from.

A handful I did during peak UK tariff pricing exceeded the 25%

The last HV that sold at Holts was over $13,000.
If you look on GB or GI you can find NIB Rigby Highland Stalker in 275 Rigby for $16,000. My first Rigby was a 275 HV. I was not impressed at all and I resold it. Just my Opinion, I paid $6,000 for it. To me $13,000 no thanks given for $3,000 more you can have a beauty already in the US

I’ve imported about a dozen firearms, including a few from Holt’s, other auction houses and private sellers. I’ve never been charged VAT, so I’ve never done paperwork to recover it. Except for the very first firearm, I’ve imported them myself on an ATF form 6 and C&R license, only paying shipping, no custom fees. You’re making it sound far more arduous than my experience.

I wouldn't own a Sabatti if my life depended on it. Ken Owen thinks they are the greatest double rifles ever made AFTER he works on them. The compromise viewpoint would be never buy a Sabatti not shot and regulated by Ken Owen. Caveat super friggen emptor.

I don't know anything about them, just throwing it out there.

I shoot a Heym.
