The wife comments made me chuckle as I literally had this conversation 20 mins ago.

I bought a turn of century rigby mauser and its still in the mail.

told the wife on friday a package coming to door for signature. she didnt ask anything extra

today it came up and she said it was what probably $10k. i smiled and said no, she said "well surely $5K?

and luckily and truthfully I could say NO.

and she didnt say another word

I too am curious who would have been the actual makers for the rifle in the 1980’s. Clearly a London gun, but not sure Roberts did much double builds from his shop. Not my style, which is good since I do t have the coin to drop over 1/4M for one rifle, but think it’s a cool piece for what it is.

The name was put in it by the Rigby company and it was built to their specifications. That makes it a Rigby. All the great makers have used out workers at times.

In the 80s there were a fair number of rally qualified builders who had trained at major makers that were doing freelance work. The majors didn’t have enough volume to keep them employed. Some eventually made guns with their own names on them as well.

Friends, I just chatted with Ken Owen and I got more info on this rifle that makes it exceptional. He told me that with either his handloads, or off-the-shelf $20 a box Sellier & Bellot factory ammo, it shoots a group that can be covered by a thumbprint at 60 yards. That feat is with or without the scope on the rifle with no change in regulation.

It has cocking indicators too! Unmolested, it has claw mounts and the matching scope that is German and clear.

I think it's a great bargain at $7500. He says its the most accurate small bore double rifle he has ever shot.

Good thing the butt plate is nicely engraved, so you can brand yourself with a lovely mark with just a few consecutive shots. Just make sure to mount the rifle perfectly each time... It is very reasonable price for the potential of such an exquisite "tattoo"...

That’s a security measure, kind of like cutting the tail off your elephant tradition. Should you forgetfully leave it under a tree, you have this Cinderella perfectly fitting impression to prove ownership.

Granted, how one could wander off forgetting they aren’t lugging the weight of a 600NE is a different matter. Then again, if hunting with a near $400k rifle, I would expect a gun bearer and one dependable enough to remember to bear the rifle.

I'm familiar with the brand, engraver but not the price . I feel these are made to be showpieces adorning some ones glass and magogany curios. I asked some PH how many 200K rifles they see on the field and they said very, very few and those that do bring a handful of them.

There are many 8mm Mauser. This would shoot 8x57JR. The .318” bore, rimmed version. Ammo and brass readily available, it will kill anything a 30-06 will, but a little bit better.

You know Holts is in England right? The estimate is in £ not $. This means at £3000 it’s already over 4000USD and at £5000 it’s almost 7000USD. All of that is before any processing fees, VAT, shipping, customs importation, and tariffs.

Good deals can be had on foreign auctions BUT you better be familiar with the process and additional costs after the hammer drops. I’ve bought a fair number of guns from Holts over the years but the “deals” ended 3-4 years ago. I also used to make sure I had the guns looked at in person on their viewing day before bidding. Not knocking them, but Holts does a good job at hiding imperfections.

The regular is regulated for the 175gr which is where the high praise was derived. $100 and a gunsmith can ream the chamber throat if required, it would then handle the 175gr bullets. Some need no changes to the throat, some do. Cheap and easy.

Gorgeous Rifle. I was tempted to pounce on it as well, but I currently own four .416's - plus the whole baby thing and saving money. Side not this is a terrible thread
