What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

I didn’t read but a few of the first page and a few on the last page so forgive me if I’m repeating some of the 26 pages in between. If you’re a man and you have pants on, you should have a knife. End of story and I include shorts in the pants comment. You never know when you’re going to need a knife and you should not have to go looking for it. Just because you have one, doesn’t mean you have to attempt to help. It just means you’re prepared if you need it.
@Lance Hopper - Agree and you stated it PERFECTLY ! Men carry a knife - everywhere & everyday

Why? Outside of the kitchen or shop or gutting an animal in the field, I have no need for a knife. Kitchen knives are in a drawer, knife/box cutter in toolbox, and hunting knife in my daypack. I don't need to wear a knife to prove anything to anyone. My pants pockets are full of cell phone on the left side and small card wallet + keys on right side. That's stuff that actually is essential at all times. I stopped carrying a regular butt wallet more than twenty years ago. Just a comb is sometimes more than my boney arse can handle in a back pocket.

Only stupid sheep are afraid to stop following the flock. Stereotypes are for fools who don't have enough brains or courage to think for themselves outside the box. And it's pretty obvious to anyone who knows me that I don't belong to that club. Does avoiding stereotypes make me more of a man? I don't know and I don't care. It makes me me. But you go ahead and carry a knife if that's what you think it takes to be a man. :D Or does wearing stage props make you less of one? Hmmm.

To answer the original question, for finishing off wounded elephants of course. Isn’t that why the rest of you carry knives?
Uh, yeah. I just have a little trouble getting the elephants to hold still while I cut their throat.

I’m going to try to be polite here…

It’s possible he meant more in line with what is often perceived as an aggressively contradictory stance in many of your posts. Maybe it’s autism, or oppositional defiance disorder, or just good old fashioned grumpiness, but when it comes to discussing personal preference topics, your responses are tiringly contradictory to the point it presents as intentional, malicious, or willful ignorance.

You have a modicum of experience and knowledge. You are not, nor are any of us, the ultimate authority on any topic discussed here. It’s not productive to the discussion nor the atmosphere here to dismiss other perspectives as below your rationale over and over and over again.

The “best” contributors to discussion on this forum offer their perspectives based on experience and research, but do so with a healthy dose of humility, which does not conflict with, but rather enhances and is enhanced by confidence. When asking questions to which they do not know the answer, or clarification of answers, they are able to digest the good and the bad without inflammatory responses, even when those answers might conflict with their established opinions.

THAT is part of what makes a male a MAN, not being “right” all the time.

Disclaimer: I’m not trying to put labels on you, but rather to give some insight into how your posts may be perceived by others. You are free to analyze or dismiss at your leisure. Being aware of how one is perceived may aid in making friends, regardless of whether or not you desire such treasures.

I carry a 40 plus year old Leatherman and a 34 year old Swiss Army Deluxe Tinker. The Swiss knife was actually a required item when I was a new hire Flight Engineer on the Boeing 727. No fixed blade except last year I brought one when I cut off an elephant tail. That always suffices.

I always carry a small pocket knife in my left pocket and a razor sharp folder in my right. It saved my life once. When I go hunting or on Safari, I always carry my fixed blade Gerber. You never know, it may save your life. It's also a good idea to learn how to use it in various situations.

@Ontario Hunter - I am Not surprised that you don’t belong to any “flock” or “Club”

We bumped some poachers. Trackers and gov. scout took off sprinting after them. Shots were fired in the distance. I’m separated from ph by some brush, I think he’s there. I’m suddenly gripping my rifle, head on a swivel. No clue where the truck is, where I am, or where everybody else went. All worked out just fine but…carry plenty of bullets and a knife. TIA

Africa or South Texas? That’s a heart pounder enough at home, probably needed a smoke after that considering the larger location. Law of the land vs law of the jungle, if you will.

Lol, we had 2 contacts with poachers in 7 hunting days. Recovered live ammo, bags of meat, captured a poacher. It was nuts. I had a late hunt mid November and I surmise the poachers thought safari season was over and moved in thinking no one would be around.

I'll take the Vortex scope cover you have listed in the Pay it Forward thread.
