Gauging Interest: Group Hunt for Big Game, Pheasants and Big Bore Shoot at the Rockin G Ranch

Forum Sponsor Eric @gizmo and I have discussed the possibility of a Group Hunt and Big Bore Shoot at the Rockin G Ranch. No date or even month has been set, as we'd like some input and ideas from members first.

My rough idea was two or three days of hunting for Big Game or Exotics and hogs that Eric has on the Ranch. One day of fishing (makeup day for anyone that hasn't scored their target animal) followed by one day of Pheasant and Quail hunting with the Rockin G Ranch dogs. The last day would be a Big Bore Shoot 375 caliber and up.

The month would have to be cool enough that the dogs overheating isn't a danger, so August and September are out. I'd prefer late November or early December, but ideas and suggestions are most welcome.

Best time to hunt birds in Texas is February in my experience. Warms up a little from January and still cool enough for dogs. Doesn’t conflict with most other hunting seasons. That’s when I last hunt quail on my cousins place around big spring.
 
February may be workable.

I was interested in hunting Nilgai, but Eric says they are only hunted through August because they just don't survive the winters.

My thoughts are turning to Bison for me, and a Red Deer (hind) for Tina. Add a few Pheasants and the freezer would be full for quite a while.

I've got access to a variety of Big Bore bolt guns, but I don't have any Double Rifles. If anyone has access to one, especially 470NE or 500NE, I'd make it worth their while to come.

Not that big but I have a 450/400 double.
 
I can make February work for sure, could me mild or snow up there never know.
CZ 375 and 458 Lott I can bring if we get something worked out.
Not sure on what I will hunt other than birds but I am sure Erik will have something
 
As I understand it, Hogs are free ranging on the Rockin G, and there is no bag limit.

Zebra
Animals such as bongo, markhor, sambar, ect. are done on a price request basis.

I'm considering Bison, Red Deer and Eurasian Boar. I'd fill my freezer with Eland if one were available.;)
 
The Pheasant and Quail are shot over pointing Drathaars like Maggie.

What's a Eurasian Boar run these days?
 
Rifles that I have access to for the Big Bore Shoot

I can work on finding large bore double rifles for the shoot. There has been some discussion on the forum lately on training for Dangerous Game and charging targets. This might be a good time to put your imagination to work and see what Eric thinks can be done on his range.

It would vary depending on the number of days we wanted to make it, and the species each person wanted to hunt. The Lodge can accommodate 8 Hunters if IIRC.

For the larger game, I'd think 2 days would be the minimum for any of the free range game and hogs. One full day for the Pheasant and Quail hunting, and I think including one day of fishing might be a good idea. Some fish in the lake are catch and release, but I believe some can be had for dinner. At least half a day for the Big Bore and Dangerous Game shoot, depending on the number of guns and shooters involved. For me I plan on 5 days to do everything that Eric offers.

The Rockin G does have a 2 Day, 3 Night minimum.

This thread is to gauge the interest, then Eric will put a package together with dates, prices and available species. Once he does that it might be a good idea to jump on it quick with only 8-10 slots available.
 
Has anyone hunted Rio's here before?
