Safari Packing 2.0 with Philip Glass

I use the 1615. I like it. For some reason, in Houston, it always comes out with the oversized baggage. IDK why. This is the only airport that happens at.

It will happen at many other airports! Keep head on swivel.

Thanks Phillip, great video, even for those of us who have been several times around the world
Always a little tip here or there! Thanks

A cautionary tale regarding the Pelican SUITCASE...

I went through exactly the same process Philip Glass did, regarding the suitcase. After a couple safaris, even the best quality Delsey, Samsonite, etc. suitcases came back damaged to various degree

Conversely, the Pelican gun case survived with cosmetic damage (who cares!) but no structural damage :)

So, Eureka! indeed, let us go for a Pelican suitcase.

My first one was the Air 1605. Arriving at Jo'Burg, no suitcase at the carousel. Dang! After 2 hours of tracking and searching with various Delta and airport folks, we found it at the SAPS (police) station. Handlers, recognizing a tale tell black Pelican, had assumed that it was a gun case. Got the suitcase, but missed the connection and lost one hunting day

Back home, a better idea came. The Air 1605 was too small anyway, so I bought a 1615, and in a stroke of genius, took it in blue color. Nobody would ever confuse a blue suitcase with a rifle case, right? :ROFLMAO:

Wrong! The same story repeated, with a twist, on my next two safaris, one time in New York, and one time in Phoenix

In New York, the airline counter agent refused to check it because "she was not allowed to check a rifle case". Never mind explaining and showing: look THIS is a rifle case (pointing at the Pelican 1700) and THAT is a suitcase (pointing at the blue Air 1615). No joy!. Repeat. No joy! Open the suitcase to show there is no rifle in it. No joy! Call the Supervisor. No joy! Supervisor declines to intervene. Police shows up, they get it. No joy! Agent still refuses to check it. Finally, police takes me to rifle checking station and the suitcase is checked as a rifle case. Got the flight by the skin of the teeth, but that 1 hour episode got me close to chest pains, and it took me the entire flight to Africa to reset (n)

PS: OK, I already knew that traveling with a rifle through JFK is bordering on stupid, but Delta had canceled the connector flight from PHX to ATL due to weather, and rerouted to JFK and could not check the luggage all the way to Africa...

Following year I thought the jinx was over. Wrong again! Departure from PHX, same story, although in this case, after waiting 15 minutes for him to arrive, the Supervisor forced the agent to check the suitcase. Another stress test (n)

You guessed it, the next year I was back to packing my old faithful Red Oxx Safari-Beanos PR5.5 Large Duffel bag (the universally recognized best safari bag there ever was!), and have been ever since

Added bonus, the Beanos does not weigh the 14 lbs. the Air 1615 weighs, so no need to stress the maximum 50 lbs. limit ;)

I know, I know, this is not supposed to happen and probably never happened to Philip, God bless his heart :ROFLMAO:

This is exactly why I stopped carrying my archery equipment in Pelican style cases. One of the benefits of archery equipment is it can go inside normal luggage and come out on the turnstile with all the other luggage.

Standing in line for my bow, then opening it to prove it’s not a rifle got old. So switched to rolling duffle bags for archery equipment.

Do rolling duffles pass muster at Joberg?

Philip,
I always redo my packing list for every trip and carry it in a folder with other documents. When packing my bag, I also take a quick picture especially for valuable items including rifles, scopes, binoculars, etc.

I have been required by airlines to give a complete list of every item in my checked bag when lost. I keep receipts (pictures on my phone) and can tell you what was in my bag and how much it cost. It is hard for airlines and insurance companies to argue with receipts and pictures.

If you don't have a list, you will not remember everything in your bag.

Great video. Thanks.

@Philip Glass How did you remove the plastic lock loops from your Pelican 1750? Inquiring minds want to know.

On a previous trip, one of the (very nice and helpful) counter personnel mentioned that actual locking rule for that airline was that ALL locking loops needed to be locked. She also said that nobody actually enforced the rule and was quite impressed by how neatly I had packed my rifle (bolt removed, cut out foam, everything in plain sight, etc., etc.,). When you mentioned that you had removed the plastic only loops, it reminded me of that conversation.

Thank you! I am also heading over on my first trip in June and your videos and advice have been very helpful.

Been there, done that, due to bad influences from @Philip Glass and others on AH. It worked great on my last trip.

Metal cutting saw, fine metal file, a bucket of elbow grease.
If you own power tools, it reduce the need for elbow grease to a tea cup.

I had a couple of issues traveling with the Pelican Air 1615, I went back to my LL Bean rolling bag. For some reason, these Pelican cases can cause issues with certain ticketing agents.

Sorry for the slow responses I'm enroute to Zim. It is the 1615 TRVL.

Yes you are correct. There can be issues especially with the black cases. When checking in at the counter I always have to say emphatically "This is my suitcase". Never had the big problems you had but it does sometimes come out with the oversized luggage. In JNB today and most of the time it come through as "Fragile" and is with the oversized luggage. Hilarious TIA! Mine was one of the last to come out. The benefits of the Pelican outweigh the pains in JNB. When it comes a rainstorm my suitcase beats yours.
On to Airlink to Vic Falls tomorrow.

Ok, I will have to watch it, and really want to, its just likely to make me feel embarrassed. As I am ad hoc throwing things into my roller bag last night before departing tomorrow, I felt so proud of myself for packing so darn early. I mean I had my cigars ready, small bottle of Blantons for the evening after should an elephant fall, and of course my rifle and loads all properly readied, but my roller is just stuffed with Nerd Clusters for Gareth and trackers. Like I am not bringing my Pelican Air case that matches yours, even in color, this trip, as I was trying to conserve weight for more Nerd Clusters.

Will cram a couple pair of lightweight Kuiu shorts and shirts into my little daypack and new Pelican ATX carry on along with Binos and leather. I need to better myself on planned packing, and realize just how desperately when I see videos on it or when @Tanks posts his excel spreadsheets...makes me painfully aware just how far away from "dialed in" I really am.
Dang it! I knew I forgot something. The Blanton's! Duty free will have to do.

I just got a pelican 1615. This thing is huge. I am concerned it’s too large for travel on some of the smaller regional flights overseas and you could easily overweight it. I have wondered if I should have got the 1595 air. They weigh practically the same. Debating if I get a 1595 or stick with the 1615 and get the carry on size to compliment it.
No size issues anywhere with the 1615. It weighs what it weighs and only lots of big bore ammo concerns me on staying under 50lbs.
