At What Point Are DG Hunts No Longer In Your Future?

Just curious on people’s experience. Personally I turned 67 Saturday am blessed to weigh what I did playing college football and am in great shape. While I exercise daily father time gets us all at some point. Would love to hear people’s experience or knowledge of some one who has been able to hunt DG at an advanced age. Here is a great example, My first elephant hunting 7 days walking a total of 107 miles was with ph Lou Hallamore who at the time was 81 and going strong!!! When do you ever know it’s over? I personally love DG hunting over all else. I know there will be a day when only PG will be in my future then none at all.
I had a successful archery hunt for a male lion (CBL) with Hans DeKlerk (DeKlerk Safaris out in the Khalahari) at 65. So long as you are moderately fit, with decent eye sight and good cognitive ability, go for it! You're not getting any younger, and as I like to joke- at this age, what do you have to loose?!

I have a friend in his early 80's now booking his 7th elephant and a hunting trip to Angola. I hope to at least follow in his footsteps if not longer.

75 now, shot a hippo at night on land, four years ago.

Still waiting for the lottery so I can hunt a nice Ellie :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

My mother asked me a couple of years ago. "You have been hunting elephants and stuff since you are 16, aren't you done now, how long will you keep going?"

My answer was: "As long as I can walk without assistance." I was 67 then, and 69 now and still can walk. I will be in Namibia this year on my 70th birthday, hunting buffalo.

I’m 76 and have successfully hunted the big five and dangerous seven and continue to hunt Africa dangerous game every year. I’m a little banged up from playing college football but can still walk just fine. I may have the boys carry my rifle some and maybe help me up a steep bank but that’s just fine with me. There are many tough terrain hunts in Africa ie Dande etc but also many with quite favorable terrain like Nyakasanga or Sengwa. Just match the area to your ability and enjoy yourself. Way beyond the pressure of taking the biggest buffalo or elephant- just enjoy the sunrise and sunset and everything in between.

When l feel my reaction time is to slow to stop a charge. I would not want to put myself or others in a dangerous situation

My 40th bday to myself was my first Safari for tuskless, already booked for Zim again in 27 for buffalo.

After that I want a Leopard & Hippo on land; but I’ll probably do my third trip to Australia for a Banteng in Arnhem Land before that.

Honestly I’m easing into Africa while I’m physically able to do the dangerous game and will continue as long as I’m able to walk unassisted and not be a burden.

@Red Leg
With your affection for the black bovines, have you ever been to Australia for Water buffalo and or Banteng? - only population of Banteng in the world you can hunt.

You mention exploring other countries, Australia when you get into the remote areas is amazing.

If I wasn’t already booked for Zim in 27, I would be headed to Arnhem land with Alex Jagers at Back Country Safaris he’s a sponsor here.

First thanks so much for your reply! I did not just want to send an emoji to someone who has taken both the Big 5 and Dangerous 7...a big congratulations to something few hunters have done!!! Still pursuing My Big 5 with only my leopard remaining just do not care for a croc and hypo but people like my friend @Philip Glass keep messing with me, lol!!!!

I have seen your exercise regimen...much harder than mine which I think is pretty good...I have no doubt; you will set new standards!!!

No Banteng around northern Burma and into Nagaland anymore? (I know, I am way behind on current conditions)

I’m 65 and have no plans to slow down. I’m recovering from knee replacement surgery and am back on the bike, weights and hiking. There’s no way something like that is keeping me off the mountains.

Just keeping it real....I hope Mama doesn't get a vote to put the quietus on it.....

I turn 61 next month. This January I tore a meniscus in my knee due to bone on bone arthritis in my right knee. I will have knee surgery this September and will receive an entirely new metal and high grade plastics knee. In June of 2028 I will be in Limpopo stalking Buff. That will be my last time (and my first).
Had both of mine replaced 13 years ago, I just turned 76.

My wife and I worker out 6 days a week. I was bone on bone and did a tremendous amount of leg work etc.

mine were Smith-Nephew knees perfectly designed for each leg.

I went over and above with rehab and my physical therapist concentrated on range of motion before strength.

Worked out great. I’ve felt better the last 13 years than the previous 20 before the operation.

So give that rehab everything you have and it will be good.

I have a grizzly hunt booked for 27 in Alaska's Brooks Range. If I enjoy that hunt, I'm going to focus a few years in AK while I'm still somewhat young and can move up ugly terrain. I'm booked out to 2029 anyways, but its always good to plan ahead ha.

May 2026 - Namibia (32 days till wheels up)
June 2027 - Alaska
June 2028 - Zimbabwe
September 2029 Wyoming

For me shooting Sporting Clays at least weekly helps with reaction time. I shoot true pairs at every station regardless of what is posted, with gun at port position. Most of the time I use a pump shotgun making it even more interesting.

I will be looking for a set of these when my .505 is done... sadly not cashed up right now for these. :(
Need anything in trade?
Cheers,

what kind of velocity does the 140 grains list, curious how they would fit in with my current 130 gr, supply of 270s. maybe a pic of the box data listing vel. and drop. Oh and complements on that ammo belt, nice.
