My daughter isn't a hunter.

She's not an "anti-hunter," just a non-hunter.

She owns a handgun (S&W 380 EZ) and she can shoot very well.

She's only 5'2", so needs to get shoulder fired firearms that fit, but at a price point that is not excessive.

"Santa" gave her a Pointer Acius O/U 20 gauge for Christmas. The LOP is fine, but the grip is too large for Jack Dempsey.

Recommendations on 2 rifles?

A Ruger 10/22 will probably be one.

The other???

I’d consider an AR10 in a versatile caliber like 308 or heaven forbid, 6.5 CM…

They can be had stupid cheap these days ( +/- $450 from Bear Creek Arsenal as an example)… are completely modular, come with and adjustable stock, can be used to hunt almost any big game in North America if she ever decides to go that route, and among younger generations AR platforms are super popular, and pretty much any gun guy under the age of 40 is going to be familiar with it…

They are also super easy to maintain…

A bit big and unwieldy for home defense… but, personally I wouldn’t encourage anyone that isnt properly trained to go into CQB mode and try to “clear” their home of an invader… I think way too many range rats fancy themselves as just one step below a Delta operator in capability just because they spent 20 days at the range last year and shot 500 rounds…

Most people would be far better served barricading themselves in their bedroom, pointing the most deadly firearm they possess at the threshold of the doorway, calling the police, and praying the bad guy doesn’t force them to do anything further..

Frankly a semi auto 308, shot at a target 10-15 feet away that’s crossing the “fatal funnel” of a doorway from a barricade and supported position behind the bed is a pretty impressive tool…

For years (nearly forty) I've been using a short action Rem 700ADL .308 as the demonstration rifle for small kids in the State's Hunter education program. The LOP was cut, recoil pad added and a great deal of wood was sanded away making the grip and forend suitable for small hands. Before the risk averse lawyers ruined the course I could use handloaded ammo- 170 gr 30-30 bullets at 1700fps. Most students were addicted to it by course-end. I don't know what is currently available but I'd think a Model 7 in 7/08 or 308 would be a good starting point.

10-22 a very good choice

Maybe a ar uppers are easy and relatively cheap.
If she does want to try hunting or target shooting later
6.5grendal upper can work for both with out much recoil

Savage 110 or the new(er) Savage Axis with a scope combo. Savage has/had a program whereby you could buy the rifle with the shorter youth stock and within five years you could get an adult stock for free. They both have stock spacers included too. I bought my non hunting daughter in law the Axis “Muddy Girl” model in .243 several years ago that came with a Bushnell scope. She likes it and is fine for occasional range fun. 7-08, .25-06 or Crudmore cartridges would be good too.

My wife has the same gun in 7mm-08 and absolutely loves it. Very accurate and fits a woman perfect.
I think that’d be perfection right there

A couple other options to consider:
Rem model 7 or older 788 (that was my first deer rifle in 243 as a kid)
Ruger #1 in something mild mannered like 6.5x55 or 7x57.

It impresses me every time I shoot it how accurate that little rifle is! I wanted to get hers in a 7-08 but when she got it ammo and brass for that was non existent in our area. The 6.5 has done her very well though and I do not regret going that route now.

If you're thinking about a Ruger 10/22, also give the CZ 457 a look. I have both, and the CZ is more fun and significantly more accurate. It's a bit more money, but if I was shopping for another, I wouldn't even look at the 10/22.

Savage Lady Hunter in 270WIN was the choice of my wife and they are made to better fit the female body shape. Capable of everything up to elk sized game. Wife took a kudu at 100 yards with a single shot. I believe I had about $1500 invested in the rifle, scope & mount, but I'm sure it could be done for a less.

Just went through the similar decision process on hunting rifle for the wife, (very little shooting experience). I bought her a Benelli Lupo 270. Easy controls / loading and unloading, light to carry, no recoil with the progressive comfort module, and 1 MOA accuracy with anything you load in it. She's 5-9 and it fits her perfectly; the height of a person is where off the shelf stuff gets dicey.

Ruger American Ranch or a youth model in .223 , 7-08, 7.62X39 or .308 depending on anticipated usage. Good, accurate, low recoil, suppressor ready, utility guns in the neighborhood of $550.

I am going to buy one of these, the GEN 2 model, for my grandsons. LOP can be as short as 12 inches. Thinking 308 and suppressed.

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
