Whisky appreciation

@CoElkHunter - Not usually had in a mixed drink but no one should tell you how to enjoy your bourbon.

I’ve had Blanton’s a few times and enjoyed everything about it except the price. IMO there are many better options that come in below the $100 mark. And there are those of us that remember buying this in the early 1990’s for $25-30 a bottle or less. After the bourbon boom of the late 90’s and into the 2000, the price skyrocketed.

Don’t get me wrong, they deserve their place in the market and they are a wonderful bourbon. I’ve just found more interesting options at a more attractive price point.

Has anyone done some of the bourbon trail tours in KY? I am taking my two son-in-laws there in April. We booked Buffalo Trace and Wild Turkey tours but curious if others have experience or advice on must visit places while we are there.

Maker’s Mark has a lovely campus and onsite restaurant. Willet’s is nice. Angel’s Envy has great story, beautiful tasting room.

I like Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or...now just Nectar, also will not turn down Red breast 10 y/o

I had the Nector at the Glenmorangie distillery last fall for the first time. Simply excellent whisky!

I bought a bottle at the distillery and shared it while stalking red stag in Scotland.

I've purchased a bottle since returning to the US. Yet to open that one. Maybe that will change tonight!

I got a bottle of 12 year for Christmas. I don't have a palate good enough to tell you all the flavors, but I like it. Good for mixing and a decent sipper.

Found a few this week, Heaven Hill drop in Ohio (not allocated), the KO at a northern Kentucky store for $100 was a really nice price, and finally a ER 12 and Hancock's Reserve trades with a friend.

Jefferson's Ocean gets a bad rap, possibly deserved, as an overpriced gimmick. At the typical retail of $90-95, there are a skiff full of better options at or below that price. However, when I can find it for less than $60 or so, I pick one up because I enjoy the concept of the gimmick, I like the bottle form factor, and sometimes the whiskey inside is decent. About a year ago, I stumbled upon this V24 amongst a sea of V28s (current Voyage is 31) on sale for $45. This is the only Voyage not to have embarked from Savannah, GA; instead, this one left The Everglades and spent it's entire journey in the Caribbean. So you could say that this is a double gimmick at half price - can't beat that. There's not much to the palate at 90 Proof, but the nose and the finish have a funky punch and linger which allows me to bask with a single dram or two for a good bit and be satisfied. If I activate my imagination, I even get a hint of sea salt. Ahoy, matey!

I have a bottle of Laphroaig whiskey I bought in Scotland.......Not a personal fan of the smokey peat but definitely unique and enjoyed by my guests.

Eating lunch at Nelson’s Green Briar distillery before the show in Nashville tomorrow, I shall get the sampler flight to determine what bottle to buy.

How is the show? I'll be there Friday!

Yessir. That's "deep end of the pool" for me too. I can appreciate it, but damn...

First day at the show for me will be Friday, went to the distillery with my wife for lunch. This bottle was talking to me.

Oh, snap! It says, "Take me now, or lose me forever!"

Norm Hooten is a personal friend…

FWIW, while I’m admitting I’m biased (due to friendship), H&Y is absolutely my favorite American whiskey.. the 12 year has some incredible sweet apple and caramel notes on the finish that are divine.. and it’s silky smooth, almost like a quality rye…

I won’t spend pages talking about Norms accolades… but… I will say he is a no shit genuine hero, one of the most devout patriots I’ve ever known, that tirelessly gives and gives and gives to the veterans community…

Google “Norm Hooten Delta Force”… hundreds of hits will come up.. he’s been on a few podcasts, done a handful of interviews, etc..

If you’ve seen Blackhawk Down, one of the central characters, “Hoot”, played by Eric Bana (ie “this is my safety, sir”)… is Norm in real life…

FWIW, the only thing better than their whiskey is their cigars… the Gothic Sepent is an incredible smoke…

Jerome, do you think my last post in rough camping must maybe shift as an article?
