In late 2025 I got a belated anniversary present from my wonderful wife, a lightly used Chapuis Double in 9.4x74r. She's beautiful, dainty, sophisticated, and I love her.

The rifle came with 1.25-4 swaro on quick detach mounts, 210 rounds, and the twice that in componants and brass but needed 1.5 inches added to its length of pull and a better mount for the included Docter red dot (which sat at the breech and was too far back for my tastes). In the end I went with MAKlick quick detach for EAW pivot mount which is amazing. I believe they make them for the Aimpoint Micro too but not yet for the RMR

It was regulated in Norma Vulkan 232gr but shoots handloads (285gr S&B Semi-jacketed soft points with 56.5grains of N150 and Remington Large Magnum primers) with holes touching at 50m and recoil is very mild now it's got the correct LOP. But still not fun zeroing the red dot, scope and (adjustable) irons in the prone all in one session as I was taking it to France the day after getting it back from the gunsmith.

With an invitation to a friends driven boar shoot in France burning a hole in my emails I packed it up in my old Pelican 1700 with new Pelican RE-set system inside and off to the airport last weekend. Airline joining instructions specified that ammunition must be in original packaging so I had chatgpt knock up some convincing Kynoch labels and made up some boxes thinking that:
1. It's unlikely that the airline rep is unlikely to be an ammunition aficionado,
2. Kynoch's recent liquidation would work in my favour,
3. they're iconic and cool as hell.
Unfortunately chatgpt really didnt want to list the quantity as anything other than '40' but anyway it all went off without a hitch.

If you're reading this then I suspect you're already a fan of double rifles but if not then may I recommend getting a snappy left and right of charging boar and reconsidering your position. In the morning I spoke for ten boar including those two and can't think I'd been nearly as successful or enjoyed myself a half as much with with a bolt action or straight pull than I did with a nippy and agile double. Though truth be told I could probably have got another opportunity if I'd practiced reloading from by belt more beforehand.

Pic 1:
The rifle in question with MAKlick Quick detach red dot, longer length of pull, and rubber trigger guard (maybe unneccessary but I like it)

Shameless glamour shot

Pic 3:
Rifle in pelican 1700 with Pelican RE-set system and accessories (clockwise); Red dot, spare ears and batteries, Leatheman wave+ , Swarovski scope, ammunition and cleaning kit. First time I've used the RE-set but I won't hesitate to recommend it. The brown tape on the bottom edge is holding an Apple airtag

Pic 4:
The aformentioned left and right where they fell. Yours truly in my kilt - I'm a scot, it's basically the law to shoot in it.

Well done sir.

Fantastic, lovely write up… you don’t hear of many double figure (for one gun) driven pig days now! Where did you get the foam from in the UK?

Yup left and right on boar is great fun....and been there but at least on the 2nd day of freezing and being wet I fired one shot in last min of last drive and connected....Best I think with my sorely missed Jeffery double in 9.3x74r in Hungary was bit under 30 boar ....over 3 days....was in hot spot on most drives....only had 6 supposedly each ...but decided to worry about extras after....worked out I only paid extra for the red stag I shot on the one day we were in an open area....as others didn't connect as well as I did...so the full quota wasn't exceeded....bit of a lucky break :E Big Grin: ....had a chapuis double before my Jeffery...they nice little rifles...

Good evening Sam,
I messaged pelican and peli.uk both of whom said there were no plans/timelines to offer it in the UK/europe so I ordered it from the US amazon and paid shipping.

Spike,
It was even worse, I'd driven overnight to get there with a hellish flu that had been going around before christmas so i was particularly misrable on peg in December. Definately hot stands last weekend though with two big sounders coming right by me

I'm going to assume this praise is for your wife? Although having a Chapuis DR in 93.74R, I can see how this description would also be very apt. Congrats on a successful hunt!
Also, have to ask, as I just ordered the Pelican Re-set for a 1700, does it seem to secure the parts & pieces well?
And kudos to your gunsmith. That stock extension is one of the better grain matches I've seen. Well done!

Glad you liked it, I was definitely referring to either my wife or the rifle.

The RE-set foam is great, a little movement post travel (some of the supporting pegs a little squint) but nothing to make me hesitate my passing it to a baggage handler with anger issues and a personal vendetta. Custom foam is probably better protection but as I travel with different guns and am always tweeking I'm very happy with it. Picture below of it with a pair of Dickson and sons 12bores which similarly needed an extra bit of LOP

As to fit, i guess I must have an older generation of 1700 so i had to cut off some tabs along the outside of the pannels (clearly there for grandfathered systems) but otherwise fit is great.

To the Op:
You Sir are a very brave man!
Hunting in a kilt in France!
My old man said that the french are hard after everyone wearing a skirt...;)
Congratulations to your formidable wife!
Congrats on your hunting success!(y)

Congrats! Beautiful rifle!

If I can say, this caliber I would prefer more then any other in 375 ang larger bore group.
Because, I will not be hunting DG all the time, whilst this rifle fits perfectly for every day European driven hunt!

Fantastic!

Enjoy it!

Nice double. as another shooter with a long LOP I just smiled when I read about increasing the LOP by a 1 1/2 inches. My chapuis 9.3x74 is my favorite rifle. Also a salute to your wife for giving you such a classy anniversary present.

Congratulations! I'm a big cheerleader for Chapuis doubles. I have the 375H&H with a red dot sight and love it. Been to Africa with it several times.

Lovely! Must be super-duper sleek being built on 28 ga shotgun action.
Absolutely, its very nimble! LOP extension has put a bit more weight at the butt helping it pivot in the hand and get the barrels up quicker. Which I'm used to with English sxs shotguns. The short barrels help with sweeping it round as quick as a willow switch.

Specifications as follows:
  • 60cm barrels
  • 4.8cm across the breach
  • Weight 3.47kg (7.63lb) unloaded without optic or sling

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get in contact with Mr Butch Searcy. I have the opportunity to buy one of his rifles chambered in 577 nitro Express however the seller does not have any of the paperwork with the information about what ammunition or bullet weight was used to regulate it. I know he is not making firearms anymore but I wanted to reach out after seeing one of your post about him.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl

Hey Steve, This is Steve Washington we met at KMG last year. I am interested in your Winchester. Would love to speak with you about it. I work third shift and I cannot take a phone with me to work. Let me know a good time to call during one of your mornings. My phone is [redacted]. Live in Florida so I have to account for the time difference.
Look forward to hearing from you.
