Hello from Scotland

Welcome to the Brotherhood. Since this African safari will be your first, contact the outfitters who help sponsor this site for their "Intro to Africa" first-timer hunt packages. They're a selection of plains game animals that can all be taken by a .308 caliber and up.

Welcome to AH realsamthompson!

Thank you for the advice, I’m very fortunate in that I have actually had an invitation to hunt… so I won’t be needing to organise that side of the job, just organising myself - which my wife would say if enough work!

Welcome to AH and the posting side! Have fun planning!

Welcome to AH. Let us know if you have any questions.

Welcome on board Sam. We have perhaps met both in person where I think you were helping at one of BB’s marksmanship training days in the Lakes but also virtually as I bought some Spuhr Blaser rings off you on SD.
Great to hear you are travelling to Africa for a buffalo. I know you will have a ball! The feeling of succeeding on your first buffalo hunt should be bottled and sold! It would make a fortune!!
I see you have got a .416 Rigby and a Swarovski Z6 picked out from another thread. Sounds like an excellent setup, especially if the scope is the extended eye relief EE version- sadly hard to find these days though they do occasionally turn up. Ammunition availability can also be challenging in the UK so my advice is to think ahead. Be careful with Hornady factory ammo that could have been on a dealers shelf for a while. It needs to have the bonded bullets not the straight DGX to be Africa worthy… Barnes Norma and Federal may be available but they are all ££££

welcome welcome welcome

i hunted stag in scotland many years ago, we stayed a small town "beauly" hunted in the highlands had an absolute blast between the sun, rain, mist, miggies (and that was in the first 2 hours). i still say it was the most beautiful scenery i have experienced on a hunt anywhere

regards

Hi Sam as a fellow Scot who has hunted Buffalo would be delighted to chat with you

Welcome aboard. I lived and worked in the UK and spent a lot of time in Scotland playing your great golf courses and spending time “on the hill” stalking stags and also hunting Roe deer. To me the Scottish highlands are one of the most beautiful places in the world. While I have hunted Africa extensively I got my start big game hunting in Scotland so I guess I have you to blame for this infatuation!! Cheers

Welcome Sam. You hunt in a beautiful place.

Welcome Sam, have enjoyed the podcasts you’ve been on, follow you on instagram and hope to have the chance to hunt with you in Scotland someday.

I hunted the Highlands last fall for the first time.

You live in one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited/hunted!

Welcome and note my profile picture from the Highlands hunt!

Gosh, that’s very kind! I’m always humbled anyone would want to listen to what I’ve got to say… and a bit shocked if they do more than once!
I have additional motivation to visit Scotland. My grandparents met there when my grandfather was there in ‘43 with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WWII before heading to Sicily and up through Italy and I’ve yet to have the chance to visit that beautiful country or the extended family who still lives there.

Hello,

I haven’t hunted in Africa before, but am starting to plan a trip for buffalo and hopefully a couple of other things for 2027 or 2028, and after ending up reading quite a few threads on here I thought I’d join to try and get the most out of it.

While I have never hunted internationally at all, I am Head Deerstalker (think PH in a tweed suit) here in the highlands of Scotland, where I run a 20,000 acre traditional deer forest, shooting about 300 deer a year. I have been hunting since I can remember, and working my way up through the industry since I was 15.

I am not at all knowledgeable about safari rifles, for the last dozen or so years I have had various deer rifles built and am very interested in precision shooting, with a 2km range of various steel targets here at home. I have kindly been invited buffalo hunting, so I won’t need recommendations about where to go (at least not the first time!), but I am sure there will be a lot of technical things along the way, in addition to the rifle which is my primary focus to organise at the moment.

A couple of photos to give you a flavour of what we do… I’m excited to pick your brains!

Best,

Sam

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!
