What is the single best piece of gear you would recommend every hunter have?

My, my @Hornedfrogbbq, you are in a general question mood today! I'll go specific. My first duck hunt 25 years ago I didn't have anything but a gun. After it, I said, "I gotta get some waders." After the second hunt with waders I said, "I gotta get a dog!" No better piece of gear on ANY bird hunt than a good dog trained for the task. Same goes for tracking big game or nocturnal hunting; dogs are a man's best friend.

Kuiu neck/face gator

That's a wide open question and it is all going to depend on where and what you hunt.

For me it all begins with a capable rifle and or shotgun. You can make do with everything else and be just fine, but once again it will depend on where and what you hunt. Some places it can be as little as tennis shoes and shorts.

But give me a rifle and a good 4x4 truck and I can get by with the rest.

Aside from the obvious (insert favorite gun, knife, etc.) I too am a big believer in the wool sweater. My lucky sweater is this ugly green zip neck item, a gift from my father, made in England and excellent quality, but apparently most unfashionable. My wife, ex-wife, ex-girlfriends, all have forbidden me from wearing this hideous thing in public. It has, however, saved the day many times over in the field. Not just for myself but often for others in my party who came unprepared. Not super heavy but still quite warm and packs easily so it’s in my day bag at all times of all seasons. From an extra layer in winter, to colder than expected nights in the mountains, or quite unexpected swim tests in cold waters, this ugly wool sweater has truly proven its worth.

All good responses.......

However,...... it's a tie.....

IMO&PE, A Brain, and Good Health!

The Brain, being full of knowledge and knowing when, where, how, to use the knowledge!!

Good Health/being in shape, this allows the body and brain to work as one to analyze, adapt, be resourceful and successful to overcome any and all adversity in any good or bad situation.

All other material items are just:
The perverbial icing on the cake to having a good time and survive the unexpected.

Gotta agree. A dog is indispensable for bird hunting ... or life in general.

I use my legs when I'm hunting so boots are important. I wear out even very high quality boots in two years. The soles will be worn flat. So for me it doesn't make sense to waste a lot of money on footwear. I'm on the move constantly so prefer layering to heavyweight coats/jackets. Quality fleece is every bit as good as wool and much more durable.

Good boots. And here in Texas, that frequently means snake boots.

+1. Absolutely.

A decent bank account. The cost to hunt is only going to keep increasing. All jokes aside, I’d say quality glass

Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
