Not sure how to post the full story but easy to find with google. Some odd details but I suspect we don’t have the full story yet as it is still being investigated. My question is why shots were fired to scare The cat away from the body-instead of just killing the cat With those shots- interesting story just the same

Mountain lions are protected in CA.

Even when laying over the body of your dead brother?

Only the people from Dept. Fish and Wildlife can take action without legal issues. And it looks like they did.

If it were my brother and I had the means, I guess they would have to throw me in jail. Animals are not more valuable than human life.

I know you are not the one making the rules. It is amazing to witness how crazy peoples thoughts truly are. I can't imagine what this country is going to look like in another 40 years.

It’s California!

Conservative common sense citizens have no say so.
I don't think it has anything to do with CA.
They'll track and kill that animal anyways as they always do.
I don't know the exact circumstances but you can't try to shoot an animal from a distance when it's over someone because you don't know if the person is dead or alive.
There's always risk of injuring or killing the person which happened in many instances in Africa.
You have to get real close or wait for an opening.

Edit: The animal was killed!

FYI PETA trains and runs the fish and game officers in California! They train them to protect all animals and harass and investigate all hunters! There are no hunters on the board of Game in CA

I believe it was the deputies that fired the shots-perhaps the brother wasn’t carrying any firearms. I certainly don’t know the rules in California.
I know my own state removed protection from cougars completely and open firearm carry is legal. I also know if your life is being threatened by bear or human or cougar-you have the right to defend it.
BUT in Cali, hell I don’t know. Ive hunted birds there is all and the guide loved to hunt bears but that has been a decade. . .
The point really is that a young man lost his life and he was a sportsman at some level and that is sad on a number of levels. I feel awful for his surviving brother.
It begs some awareness and a level of involvement on our part. And we all have an interest in dangerous game in Africa or nearer home, so I thought it was worth posting-

CA mountain lions are out of control due to ban on hunting them etc..

Also, last year one tried to abduct a three-year-old kid in my neighborhood. Luckily he was with his dad that was able to intervene.

Unfortunately those are the consequences of stupid laws. But then what can you expect out of Kalifornia. Very sad outcome.

Exactly. Last thing I want is a LEO to open fire at an animal on top of me as most of them can't hit the right side of the barn.

We were just talking about it on Friday with a friend of mine that is an EMT at an emergency room. They brought in a wanted convict that was being chased by a multitude of agencies. He crashed his car and ran at the officers with a knife.

He had 5 bullet wounds, one of them fatal. Number of shots fired? 118, basically mag dumps without aiming.

This is not accurate or true. I don’t know where you came up with that garbage but you need to remove your false comment.

This happened about 30 miles from my house and very near to where I’ve hunted deer and turkeys since 1978. Mountain Lions are common in this area. The first report I heard yesterday was that they were hiking and looking for deer shed antlers when they came upon the lion.

My son and I have seen several and a friend of mine shot one on the property next to a hunting lease I had. He was turkey hunting and the cat came in to his calling. They locked eyes at about 15 yards and the cat turned and came to him. He shot the cat with a turkey load at about 3-4 yards. He was not cited as the Game Warden who investigated the case (also a friend of mine) determined it was self defense.

It’s not the first time someone has been killed by a Mountain Lion in this area. A woman was killed about 30 years ago, 20 or so miles from where this happened. She was trail running and a lion killed and partially consumed her. Fish & Game hunted down that cat and killed it also. This scenario always concerns me as my daughter is a distance runner who trains in the area where this occurred yesterday. She completed a 50K foot race just a month ago in the same area where this guy was killed yesterday.

We have a large lion population in California, probably the largest of any state in the USA. We have no hunting season due to a statewide ballot proposition that was voted in, which made Mountain Lions a protected species. Quite a few lions are shot each year by our Fish & Wildlife Department under depredation permits.

I’ll know more details about this in a week, as I’m going to be turkey hunting with a close friend who is a Game Warden that grew up right where this guy was killed yesterday. He’s involved with most lion incidents in this region, so it’ll be interesting to hear what he has to say.

’Wldwilderness’ is completely clueless with what he posted about our Fish & Wildlife Department. I know a large number of people who’ve worked in that agency and nearly everyone of them that I know loves to hunt & fish. My son and I have enjoyed many days afield with friends who work in our Fish & Wildlife Department.

A neighbors bull was hit on the road in front of our farm and an occupant of the car was injured. While emergency response was providing aid, the bull previously thought dead, got up and charged. End result, dead bull and a responder who took a .45 slug in the knee and out the ankle. Some of them could definitely use more range time.

I grew up in the area and my dad was the game warden in Georgetown when the jogger was killed in Auburn Lake Trails. My dad got a local houndsman to catch the lion. A necropcy revealed the female cat had a belly full of blacktail deer and wasn’t hungry.
DLSJR, you may have met my dad there.
