What region is a good place to look at to book a hunt for big eland?

Hi Jkimura.
First of all welcome to the forum! It really depends on what you are looking for when you say "big" Eland. Are you talking about horn length, or are you talking about the blue necked, bushy mop on the forehead big? My experience in our area has taught me that this big mop, does not necessarily mean long horns , as at this stage of the animal's life, depending on the region, he might have very well have started wearing those horns down. Almost every time I hunt Eland, I find a situation where the herd is in front of us, and the "younger" bulls with the smaller mop, has longer horns than the blue bull. Some hunters go for the length of the horns, especially when some of them only plan on taking the scull mount. The rest who are planning on something like a shoulder mount, want the mop, and go for the blue bull.

Good day JKimura,

Welcome to AH.com you have certainly came to the right forum to ask questions.....

I can help you find a big eland, we personally own a 70000acre open area in most Northern part of South Africa, our area is surrounded by Botswana, Namibia and also the Kgalagadi Transfortier park. We have taken a number of eland over 40" this year. There is over 800 eland on the area so you will be able to choose a bull you would like to hunt. We also have MONSTER gemsbuck, springbuck, steenbuck, duiker and many more top quality trophies to offer on this area.

Some of our forum members have hunted this area as well. I will post some pictures of bulls that has been taken this year in a bit.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have.

Best regards,

Jacques

I do apologize as I wanted to include this map of South Africa to show you exactly where our area is. It is marked with black right next to Namibia...

Thank you very much!

Not RSA but the World Record Eland (RW) came from Namibia.
Free range monster. I had the fortune of hunting in the area.

As stated earlier, it depends what you are going to call big?

That's true my friend there is some big old bulls that die out there that never even sees a human being.... I think I would call big up in that part of the world a all round bull. They have a good tuff, blue and long and thick horns. If you spend enough time looking and not shoot the first nice bull you see you will definitely find a bull that has all any trophy hunter wants!

Once I get my hard drive with all my pictures back I will post some pics of the terrain and animals that has been taken there this season.

Best regards,

Jacques

Jkimura,

I don't know what mine measured and frankly I didn't care. I was after an old gnarly horned blue bull and this is what I got. This was on the concession Jacques posted about. The red sand and light makes this bull look a bit more tan than it really was, but here he is.

My bull from 2004 in the Eastern Cape, about 3 hours northeast of Port Elizabeth. Not much in horn length, but a massive bodied old warrior.

The type of terrain he was in.

Fine looking animals all! I would be tickled pink with any of those bulls.

As you can see from the prior post that there are some big Eland's around you have to make the decision on what you are looking for.

What i would like to add is that check with various outfitters and get references. The ones posting here have some great references by the way.

Next find out what time period would be best for your quest to get your great Eland. Some months are better than others. Some months you will find the cows and small bulls and the old buggers are hidden and have to be hunted up. Great stalks to be had in my opinion. Now other months the old bulls will be near or with the cows, in my opinion that is the time to book your safari if you have made the Eland your primary trophy to get.
