thanks you pair
im trying not to get it
young fella wants to hunt deer with it
90-120 usd a pack for ammo (wow wasn't expecting that much )
he said the firearm was a 98 mauser custom and was cheap at $ 795 aussie
he didn't tell me the chaff was that dear
looks like im goin for it .......
in relation to recoil l find the 375HH pretty comfortable but ive only 7 shots out of it .
what more can l expect from this firearm ?
if we do get it atleast he will leave my 375HH alone, then maybe l will get to shoot meat animal with it .
while we here what a good load to make up for my 375HH
ive only been able to sierra game king 270 grain projectile and accubond 270 grain white tipped ballistis projectile
havnt look into powders yet , was thinking reloader any hints????
one more question ,whats a ramline stock ??

was thinking reloader any hints????

I'm not a re-loader buddy (factory ammo only, for me) ... Sure there are a lot of guys on here that could help with that.

Just have a gunsmith check out any custom built (military action) rifle, that's all I ask.

thanks you pair

A Ramline stock is just a plastic replacement stock.

Reloder powders are good. Start with Re15 for the .375. Re17 and 19 may be better. IMR 4350 is the classic. IMR4064 is great for accuracy but 4350 or IMR 4831 might go a little faster. Varget might be a good bet. I always used IMR4831 and 4350 in mine with 300gr bullets. Great accuracy and top velocities.

BTW bluey, dont you have your countryman Nick Harvey's 'Practical Reloading Manual'?? Covers just about everything.

Gotta go with ses on these recommendations. However I wouldn't say Varget might be a good bet, fairly certain it is a good bet. I also like H4895 with the lighter bullets.

gday sess thankyou very much for for that info .
the only powders l know of is adi powders and recently reloader (alliant) powders

and cant say ive even heard of no nick Harvey or his book
the only reloading guide ive used is the adi one that comes with a 5 kilo container of powder ,and what you good people have passed on

the 375HH lm having trouble getting cases and just cant get barnes tsx in this calibre from the gunshop in the next town across from us. lve bought 2 boxes of ammo for it and that's about all the cases ive got so far , and the young bloke has used all them so next time im in over night l really want to start setting up a load
thinking l might try some of the bigger gunshops when im in the city on the 17th of this month .if l get time .

now this ramline stock is it any good ?
or do l need to start really try backing out of this ,
everytime the service is coming in kody is on the phone trying to get a yes
thanks again sess

I came across and purchased a Mauser double trigger 458wm last week that I could not resist and had to buy.

Although I am nota huge fan of the 458wm the rifle was just to nice to not buy.

after reading about the caliber I think I will load a 400g bullet.

this old mauser is in great condition and I am looking forward to restoring her further. I wish I knew more about the history of the rifle !

Bluey, the Ramline is sort of a low end stock in the plastic stock world, it works but nothing fancy about it. Surprised you have not heard of Nick Harvey, him being from OZ. Per Phils answer, the only reason I didnt actually recommend Varget is because I have not used it in the .375. Its fabulous everywhere else I use it. Decisions, decisions.

Ramline is a low end stock, I don't care for them.

what's the opinion on the 458 caliber ?

thanks fellas the stock has scared me off this firearm
much to the young fellas displeasure .
l love the help and advice you guys so freely share :thumb:
thank you
im sure he will find another one soon enough

That was probably a good call bluey, if it had a Bell and Carlson, it would have been a good deal. I love Bell and Carlson stocks.

...

..your PH will have the heavy artillary anyway, so why lug around a heavyweight if you can do all your hunting with a .375..?

Using this logic why not a .22 if you are counting on the PH to finish the job for you?

In terms of versatility , the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum is obviously the more logical choice . The perfect middle ground between a plains game calibre and a dangerous game calibre .

That said , I have been using a .458 Winchester Magnum for the last 43 years against dangerous game on Problem Animal Control assignments . As well as for my personal hunting applications . And I have had tremendously successful results with mine . I have successfully used my .458 Winchester Magnum on everything from the largest Asiatic jungle elephant bull down to the most petite barking stag . I have absolutely zero regrets in purchasing a .458 Winchester Magnum .

My opinion is the 375 H&H is an all around gun. You can use it for plains game to dangerous game. It's good out to 300 meters, without adjusting majorly for bullet drop. My opinion on the 458 Win is that it is a short range gun no more than 150 meters for the most part. A lot more powerful than the 375 H&H, bigger bullet, excellent for dangerous game...not a long range weapon, could definitely be used on plains game.

Both guns could be used on big game safari depending on what is being hunted. Some people would say the perfect combo.
I agree with you enysse.

what's the opinion on the 458 caliber ?

Love it! (y)(y)(y)

In this day and age it performs exactly as promised.
Was there a time when this wasn't the case... maybe - but that was a long time ago...

I have loaded 300gn up to 550gn projectiles and have never had a problem.
My current load is the 550gn Woodleigh RNSP at just under 2100fps for 5200ft/lbs of energy.
I have also loaded the 480-500gn Woodleighs for spot on 2150fps if you want a more traditional load and this gives 5000ft/lbs of energy.

If you want some loads yell out and I'll send you some.

I know the old Win Mag has a tarnished reputation, but if people were to just give it a chance today with modern powders and projectiles - they would see it does what it says it does.
It's not the biggest or the baddest but it's proven and it works (y)

Cheers,

Russ
