.270 vs 7*57 Which is the best???

this damn thread!!!!!!

I've got a sweet little 7x57 built on a SR mauser action in the safe.. I snatched the scope off of it and put the scope on a Ruger M77 in 308 a few months back.. because I hunt with the 308 more often, and really like the zeiss optic I had mounted on the 7x57...

Now Im wanting to get the 7x57 out of the safe, take it to the range, and possibly take it on a couple of deer hunts this year...

Which means.. I now need to spend money on another optic...

you guys and all of your 7x57 love are costing me money!

:)
Ohh well, at least you don’t have to buy the rifle too. Just remember to buy something as good if not better than the Zeiss or you Will be disappointed.
Maybe a Swarovski would do it justice.
I do like my Zeiss but I mostly hoping to have a Swarovski too someday as they make some light for class scopes.

Wab,
The only source of 7x57 brass in the USA is PPU...Who else do you think is selling it?? I shoot the 7x57 a lot..The days of REm and WW have come to pass, Bertram sucks, I know no other off hand. Bullets are available due to the 7-08 and 7mm magnum. There fore I challange your post without malice!

Graf and Sons lists Norma and Nosler brass in stock but Lordy, is it expensive.

It’s available in 7x57 as far as I know, as is ammo by 5-6 other makers. How much is currently being manufactured is a different question. But a decent selection is currently out there in the states if you look a bit. No where near the variety you’ll find in 270 Win however.

Norma, readily available and high quality. I have had absolutely no trouble getting it.

I’m not sure where you’re shopping Ray, but I just checked Midway and they are offering Nosler, Norma and Remington brass in 7x57. I didn’t go to Natchez, Dirt Cheap or others, but I assume you’d find the same thing.

In my experience, components for the 7x57 are no more difficult to come by than any other caliber I load for (roughly 15).

Horses for courses son. I have both but prefer the 7x57 for Bushveld and the 270 does its best work on the open plains. Although i must admit the 270 usually takes a back seat to my 7x64!

you mean Winchester has stopped making 7x57 brass?? Does that also mean they no longer make 257 Roberts and 6mm Rem? My what is this world coming to? I can handle rioters burning down have of civilization, but Winchester reducing production of some of the best cartridges known to man- is just too much.

Midway

Unfortunately, Midway lists the remington brass as “unavailable limited production.”

Graf has Norma, nosler, and ppu in stock but ppu is the only one that seems reasonably priced to me.

It’s possible low stock is related to the current run/shortage on ammo and could improve over time.

I bought a bunch of Norma pre COVID. It was more than Win or Rem but not crazy. I’ve never had any problem getting brass and I’ve been loading 7x57 since the ‘80’s. I understand many things are tough to get right now. I wouldn’t know as I laid in plenty for everything I load.

7 X 57 brass is even easy to get over here in Australia.
My local gun shop has Norma, Sellier & Bellot, Nosler and RWS brass.
Loaded ammo in 7 X 57 has less choice but is available from PPU, Sellier & Bellot and Norma.
The .270 has a larger range of choice in both brass and ammo.

It's hard to beat a 270 for NA big game shooting a 150g Partition at 2900 to 3000 fps (I get just over 3000 fps with my handloads with no pressure signs). Light recoil, flat trajectory, hard hitting, nostalgia aside.

Great cartridge no doubt about it. However, 400 yards and in I’ll stick to my 7x57.

757 recoils considerably less (10 gr less powder in the case.) Ammo widely available. 270 is not a kid's gun (so I guess Karamojo Bell was a kid!) :p Be more like Bell!
