Hi fellas, I finally collected enough 470 cases to start reloading and was about to begin load development but run into a problem with priming. Turns out the size of the rim on these cases prevents me from being able to use both my Forster press and my Forster tool for priming. Does anyone use a seperate priming tool for their large rimmed cases? Something that uses standard shell holders? Speed of priming is irrelevant here, happy to handle one primer at a time but I don’t wan to invest in new press just for priming, I’m happy with my press and don’t really have space or need for another one.

Sorry, just curious: what exactly gets in the way on the Forster tools?

(A photo is often worth a 1000 words...)

Opposite Pole, have you tried contacting Forster? For giggles I just sent Forster an email re. this issue. I'll let you know what they say as soon as they reply. If you like, I'll call them Monday morning. I thought Forster Presses could take any caliber that used 7/8" - 14 dies. I don't have one but I like the principal they work on.

The priming tool on the Forster press utilises jaws to hold the case in place, these jaws cannot be opened wide enough to accept the large rim of 470 cases. Also the floorplate of the tool has a narrow gap the case is supposed to slide through to get under the jaws, this too is too narrow. This issue only affects priming. However it should be noted that the jaws holding the case for sizing etc. will not accept 470 case either, one has to use standard shellholder for it. Changing from the floating Forster jaws to the shell holder arrangement requires undoing two hex screws and the press can be converted so in under a minute.

Looks like we’ve got a winner

Don't know about the various tray-fed, hand held primer models/brands because some are ok and some are a little junky with zinc and/or pot metal parts. I use a hand held model but it is all steel and a bunch more expensive. Just have to decide what will work best for you. But most (not all) do use a universal type shell holder. The caveat is not all the shell holder manufacturing companies make one for the 470-500 NE sized case. The most commonly available I think is the Hornady # 55 shell holder. Midway shows out of stock but Midsouth shows in stock. Midway does show the RCBS # 46 shell holder for the 470-500 NE in stock. And depending on where you live, availability may an issue for any of the loading tools?

Correction, mine is from RCBS #46

Opposite Pole, I received a reply from Forster. it reads" yes, the hand primer Seater should be able to accommodate the 470 NE case head." For whatever that is worth.

Thanks for the info. I will get in touch with them I think and send them some pictures, unless my Norma cases are way out of specs the 470 will not fit. I'll measure them on the weekend. I've order the Lyman tool so the problem is solved but I'll be curious to follow up on it with Forster.

Opposite Pole, FYI I have found the latest batches of new Norma brass that I've loaded for the first time had VERY tight primer pockets. In fact I've had to remove minute amounts of brass in order for the primers to be inserted.

I’ve found the same with my 9.3x74R Norma brass. Few cases were so tight that I stopped with primers seated half way, I was not willing to apply any more pressure for fear of detonation. The 470 brass I’ll be using is from factory rounds I shot so hopefully the pockets won’t be so tight.

What did you use to expand the primer pockets?

A small hand held "primer pocket reamer." This tool is sometimes used to remove the primer crimp from Military Brass.

Shootist43 is right on the money.... I'm going through my first round of loading .470 and noticed tight primer pockets; luckily I have one of those primer reamers for removing crimps from 5.56 brass.

Don't bother with getting a handle, I use it as a bit in an electric drill at LOW speed.

I’m curious related to these shellholder topics. Does anyone make a ”standard outside diameter“ shellholder for the 470NE or are they all the oversized ones? I can’t fit an oversized shellholder on my area419 zero Press so I’m trying to figure out what to do for 470NE.

Do any other cartridges require a non-standard O.D. Shellholder?

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
