Resurrecting the 270 Win

My son's first elk with my 60's vintage 270 that killed dozens of elk, more deer and 9 bears. It was the only rifle I carried (or had) when I guided in the Bob Marshall I gave it to him for his 18th birthday.

@Steel Candy For quite a while the .270 Winchester, with a 6x or occasionally a Pecar 4-10x was the main long range mountain rifle in NZ for trophy hunters who did not like either the .30-06 or the .300 H & H, etc. Then suddenly the 7mm Remington Magnum became a thing! Strange how so many of the guys who went straight to a 7mm Rem Mag as their centrefire hunting rifle later purchased a .243 Winchester and reserved the 'big' rifle for tahr hunts ...

All I know is that my .270 DRTed everything I shot with it. For years using 130 gr off the shelf deer ammo. 100 pounds to 600 pounds. No idea why my friends and co workers suddenly went to .300 WSM, .300 RUM and .338 Lapau. Except 1 guy went to .243 and now to 6.5. Last year just to make a point I uncased my .375 at camp and told them I heard a really big deer was seen in the area. Of course I also had a normal sized rifle in the H3 still cased.

I just saw an article show on my FB feed from 2017 about the top 10 cartridges for hunting elk. It is a good example of a well intentioned writer giving advice/opinions that can to lead to folks getting more gun than they will ever learn to shoot well.

Makes me wonder where his DG recommendations would start, 50BMG or 20MM perhaps? I suppose if he knew I used a 25-06 and a 260Rem on elk, with one shot kills, and 270/280/30-06 were my elk favorites, he’d think I’m nuts.

Seems to me that the diehard 270 users are adherents to the policy: IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT. They are completely happy with the status quo and for good reason. There are others that are less confident with the abilities of the 270 and perceive that there are shortcomings that are eliminated by more powerful cartridges. Whether there is a factual basis for these perceptions, what is factual is their lack of confidence in the smaller cartridges. Since there are larger cartridges available, these shooters can accommodate their perceptions with a larger cartridge and in so doing increase their level of confidence. What the shooters need to do is match their level of competence to their increased confidence. If they do so, then neither group has an issue with the other. Each group is free to choose the cartridge of their choice and each is proficient in its use.

This has got be a post started by a troll. For a dead caliber they sure do still sell a lot of 270 ammo.
Back to the big for caliber bullets. I saw the 180gr weldcore cartridges sold by doubletap. Asked if those and the 160gr partitions are stable in a 1/10 twist barrel. I was assured that they are. I ordered a box of the 160s but have not tried them yet. I bought a bunch of boxes of 150gr soft point Prvi Partizan PPU at $8.00 a box and have not found a reason to stop shooting them yet. These are not hot loads but they are very accurate and everything that runs into the 150gr sp dies real fast.

I have used a .270 on my last safari, shot from a Roan to a Springbok.

I agree. For the record I am not a big 270 win fan. I always thought an 06 could do the same thing but with a 30 caliber bullet. I bought the Tikka 270 for my son only because it had never been unboxed and the guy was asking $400 for it.
It also seems to me that a good bit of the arguments against the 270 are that it requires a standard (long) action while many competing calibers only require a short action. I don't care. On top of that some rifles only have standard actions so that short bolt advantage is out the window.

Agreed, unless you’re a bench rest shooter the accuracy vs action length argument is, IMO, patently ridiculous. I have 1/2 moa rifles in short, standard and magnum action lengths. I recall a pic of Jim Carmichael with a 10” group shot at 1,000 yards with a .300 WM, obviously not a short action and certainly more accuracy than +99% of shooters can take advantage of.

The other consideration in this ultra short action/cartridge craze is magazine capacity. These new cartridges tend to be short and fat resulting in extremely restricted magazine capacity in standard configuration rifles. The WSM cartridges typically only hold 3 in the mag. For a hunting rifle, I prefer standard calibers, .270, .7x57, .243, etc., with 5 in the mag.

The first rifle my dad bought me as a kid was a 270, the first rifle I bought for myself was another 270, and I’m sure I’ll own a couple more.
