Good afternoon forum friends! I am looking for a good cheek riser. Which do you recommend? I see a great variety. All seem to be reasonably priced. What do you use? Thanks in advance for your help

SAAM shooting school provides their to all who attend. I’ve just returned From the advanced course. The risers are convenient and adjustable and have a zippered pocket on the side that is handy. Go to www.ftwsaam.com or give them a call at

You won’t be disappointed.

I don't use one and have never understood the need for one on a properly fitted stock. With regard to carrying things, there seem to be a number on the market that will do almost everything except hold a bottle of single malt. ;)

I too have the FTW/SAAM one. The label says it’s made by SpecOps.

I use FTWs cheekpads on a couple of my rifles. I 've found them to be good on my Ruger because of the higher Ruger bases. I don't need one on my Win 70s because the stock fits me better and I can use lower bases. My ideal setup is a Monte Carlo rollover comb built to fit if I can find a stockmaker to do it.

Mine looks like it could hold one or two airplane size bottles.

I just checked, it will hold two bottles. I took a photo but it will not attach.

newboomer raised a good point.
these new large objective scopes that have become all the rage have of necessity to be mounted too high.
this combined with the fact that they put a good rifle off balance tells us that what hunters should know is now being taught to us by marketing specialists rather than true hunters.

The scope on my Ruger 77 is a Leupold 3-9 x 40 VX R. The shape of the stock and Ruger's dovetail mount, bases and rings makes it a little high for me. Therefore, the cheekpad. I have the same scope on my Win 70 375HH,and 7RM. No problem. Stock shape makes the difference.

with scope size and mounts height ideally the ocular bell should just clear the bolt.
it is always a good idea to take the time and effort to achieve this.
some rifles like the older, and possibly the current blr do need a cheek riser for scope use.
older rifles like pre 64 wins were not stocked ideally for scopes, but the current ones are excellent.
rugers are quite good with appropriate rings.

My M 70s all have a built into the stock cheekpiece. My RSMs do not. Since I don't have any custom fit stocks, I compensate for this in the height of the scope rings I use for the scope mounting. So far this hasn't been an issue for me. And is far less expensive than having all my middle price range rifles fitted with stocks costing 2-3 times or more than the entire rifle cost. I have never used or even tried those strap on or lace on cheek risers. Would agree with @Newboomer about many of the new scopes with the huge objective bells. It would seem to me that those type scopes are for extreme long distance shooting, but I may have their use all wrong.

I use one on long range black powder rifles for shooting 800, 900, and 1000 yds.
the tang sight has to be raised around 1.5" to get out that far, which can lift you right off the stock.

That's interesting, never would have thought of that.

Thanks for you comments. My rifles are all purchased off the shelf. My shooting skills are gradually improving but I am not there yet. I believe my cheek weld could be helped with one of these devices. Thanks again

I think I could benefit from the school, but it is a bit pricey for my situation. I am a member of a rifle club and the members are very willing to help me. Thanks for your input.

I support Redleg’s opinion.

It’s a product to solve a problem you should never have.
Thanks. Granted, but I am in a situation where I need an inexpensive solution. I think this is going to be a positive step. It would be great to spend time on the range with a bunch of forum members. I certainly have a lot to learn.

Thanks for your input. I have a Ruger also that I hope this helps with. I try to move incrementally in the right direction. Perhaps this is a step. One of my shooting club members pointed out that my trigger finger placement was off. A small correction made a real difference. Thanks for your help on my journey!
