Ruger M77 Alaskan vs Guide Gun

Here she is scoped and ready to go. 8lbs 14oz without sling or ammo.

Very nice. What scope is on it?

On a positive note for me. I found some new 416 Ruger brass (doubletap could not find any) and shipped it to doubletap. I hopefully will finally have a box of 300 gr TSX to test out.

I bought 100 pieces of Hornady brass a few weeks ago off of Gunbroker. Someone usually has it there if it's anywhere to be found.

Leupold 2-7×33. I had it laying around, so decided to try it out on the 416.
I like that. I have ordered the Alaskan Arms QR rings but I have not settled on a scope yet. I almost want to carry two scopes. For elk (hence the 300 gr TSX) I have a Leupold VX-II 4-12x40mm that I really like. But I also want a 1.5 ish x 6/7 ish I could pop on in close stuff.

I have got to start loading myself. After I get through this spring bear hunt and the fall elk trip I will turn my attentions and money to setting up a well equipped bench. Researching the project has put my attention to other calibers that might be best suited for those that load their own. The failed/defunct 300 and 338 RCM come to mind. You can get both guns cheap. As understand it however these cartridges were loaded with proprietary powder. So I am still unclear what RCM reloads would equate too. 30-06 short round? 338 non-magnum?

@John Camp
Lots of loads with commercially available powder.

Toby I was going to order a HS Stock for my Ruger Alaskan. But I noticed the pictures and product codes for HS Precision and for Stocky's are slightly different. Did you order from Stocky's or HS? Any issues fitting with the barrel channel having enough room?

Hi Luke, and welcome to AH. If Toby is following this thread he will get a notification. If not he wont. However he certainly will get a notification if you quote him in your response. Otherwise you can send him a PM.

Thanks John, been meaning to join this forum for a while. Best place to discuss my love of big rifles with like minded folks.

Luke I don't know how many years I followed this site before finally joining. I know that so many google searches on certain guns, calibers, and species inevitably ended in an AH thread. I am glad I finally joined up and I am sure you will experience the same.

Mine is 375 Ruger. Several guide friends swear by the 375 Ruger as a bear stopper. So far I've only killed a caribou with it. Nosler Partitions at 225 yards are a bit tougher then they really need to be for a caribou but it went down within maybe 15 yards (lung shot). Almost shot a bear at close range but wasn't able to be 100% sure there wasn't a cub so I held back. Definitely an exciting moment.

Good deal. I have had mine for more than a month and have yet to shoot it. It has been a journey finding ammo and I am still waiting on a delivery. I certainly am going to have to start reloading.

Good News!!!
A brown truck brought my 416 Ruger 300 gr Barnes TSX ammo. I finally got to shoot my gun and what a blast. I was really afraid of nothing. The recoil was not bad at all. Having said that, I have not shot from a bench yet. I shot three rounds standing from 35 yards. The iron sights are about six inches low. It is supposed to be dead on at 50 yards out of the box. I assume that would be with 400 gr Hornady rounds though. I picked up a Leupold 3x9 and now just need my Alaska Arms rings and will be good to go.

Good for you! I have also just set up my .416 ruger with Alaskan arms rings and a VX3 2x8 scope. I have not shot a lot through mine yet either, only 400 grn. Where did you get your 300 grn barnes loaded? I got mine from Hendershots, good service and delivery.

I looked into Hendershots but the price was high. I ordered mine from Doubletap. They have a tremendous reputation and the price was half of Hendershot's. Unfortunately they were experiencing some turnover of staff and also had problems finding some brass so it was more than a two month wait. But, I have them now and have been assured that my next order should be delivered without the delay.

With the 400 gr did find your rifle to be sighted in at 50 yards?

No, but I have not shot it without the scope yet. Even the boresighted scope was about 10 inches low. Haven't had enough range time yet, maybe this weekend
