Thoughts on a "Bergstutzen" O/U-two different calibers in the same barrel set, 9.3x74R/6.5x57R

Wow! Looks like great inserts they make!
I don't find an email address will try again.

Now the dreaming starts.

9.3x74R and 7x65R for the Renato Gamba

6.5x65R or 6.5x57R for the Belgium Ferlach

22 Hornet for the Heym

Most of them are built around two calibers with close trajectories so that they will regulate. Bit harder with two different calibers than a normal double rifle. I had a scoped pre-war vierling (16x16 and two different rifle barrels) that put a .22 hornet, and 6.5x57 into about two inches at 100 meters. One sighted in the 6.5 and the Hornet was close enough for a fox from there on in.

Might be able to get those two to do it a 100 as well. Sight in on the .303 and slap buff around from 100 meters in with the .450. I have never seen a heavy combo like that - though wouldn't be surprised if some enterprising Teuton hasn't done it at some point.

Would sure make for an interesting combination however most are available with 9.3x74R as the biggest and then the small caliber is 6.5mm as the biggest. If the small caliber was availible in 7x65R it would make the choice easier for me.

For DG I would definitely prefer two barrels with the same caliber so the 450/400 would have to be a double only in that caliber..

I am leaning towards an O/U with two sets of barrels, one in 9,3x74R with a 1-6x scope and the other in 7x65R with a 2.5-15 scope both on qd mounts and with iron sights....

The Bergstutzen is still a very nice idea, just the calibers make the choice difficult for me.

The available calibers for the Bergstutzen are better suited to European game than African game.

Proper regulation of two (different!) rifle barrels always is a challenge.

In January, I will meet my gunsmith to talk about the idea.

He solved this problem with double rifles several times, installing a muzzle adjustment device.

I already talked to my wife about this and she said, "Another rifle good for nothing!"

But I think, it would be a good reason to visit Africa again.

You are right considering used guns, because Bergstutzen is an european number.

My idea was, to have a closer look at classic african calibers.

Americans probably would choose a .45/70 Government and a .30-30 Winchester.

Only problem is that Krieghoff do not have the 12ga as an option on the combination gun, only 20ga. If They made the combination in 12ga, I would have gone that route with 12ga/9.3x74R and then two insert barrels, one in 9.3x74R and the other in either 7x57R-7x65R or 6,5x57R, but they don,t offer it as it is on a 20ga action.

This may be interesting and affordable.

With an 6,5x57R insert barrel, it would be perfect

I would skip the idea of two different rifle calibers in a double..for obvious regulation problems..

But what about a rifle drilling...in 9,3x74R and 20 magnum shot barrel below..?

Easy to regulate (make them regulate it with the scope mounted..)..

Two rifle barrels side by side and shot for the odd snake or poacher..?

I must confess contemplating such a weapon while roaming around in the african bush..

Easily regulated with the Krieghoff system.

Just do not seem to be able to decide on what to get....K95 with different barrels, O/U with two sets of barrels and then I am back to this......

The idea of an African Bergstutzen just keeps coming back.....

9.3x74R/7x57R would be perfect but not availible, no experience with the 6.5x57 mm though...but with 156/160 gr may be close enough to 7x57R....

Today I won an auction....

It's not a "Bergstutzen", not yet.

It's a Brno Super Express double rifle in 7x65R/7x65R, side locks and double Greener action.

It comes with pivot mount bases and set triggers for both! barrels.

A second stock, bavarian style, for a lefty (picture) is included.

I want to slaughter the gun...... and build a Bergstutzen from.

My project, I want to start long since....

.450/400 Nitro Express 3" & .303 British......... my very british gun :sneaky:

Fun thread! These fascinate me!
I had a Merkel drilling (12x12x243) which I surprised a couple of coyotes while pheasant hunting. Made a mistake selling it.
I’m looking at a Krieghoff Trumpf (12x12x30-06) to replace it. Need to find out how to get a barrel insert, maybe 22 Hornet and 9.3x74r.
But I really like the shotgun combined with a mid bore.
I’ll be watching you guys!

Be carefully,..... .22 Hornet is ok, but everything bigger can and will ruin your conventional Drilling, like a Heym, Sauer or Krieghoff.

Thouse big insert barrels, like a 9,3x74R are made for really strong O/U or SxS actions.

Have that job done by a competent gunsmith....

Blasers D99 is said to be strong enough to handle everything.
