I'm quite young and have several years to go before I can even start earning a paycheck and looking at populations of the big five and anti-hunting laws I'm worried I may never be able to take any of the big 5 except maybe buffalo. What do you guys think the future of big five hunting is, will the decline of the animals go down until they are unhuntable or is there hope in reversing the way their numbers are going. Or will the government start creating more of the growing list of laws preventing importation of some of these species. How much time do you think there is truly left to take the big five or any of the rarer animals around the world.

A lot of that will depend on you and your generation. Become politically involved! Vote for people who will protect hunting and shooting. The upcoming generations seem to be less interested in hunting and fishing and the traditional outdoor activities, more and more people are living in large cities and are out of touch with the natural world and how it really works. Brainwashed by TV and Antis!
You will need to show them meat doesn’t magically appear at the grocery story.

I have felt similar. I’ve always dreamt of Africa. Sortof a “why is the sky blue” it’s just something I’ve always wanted.

I have really wanted to book a hunt in the past few years and the political climate and how social media has changed things has played on my mind.

I was able to book a buff hunt for this coming sept and couldn’t be happier. I dream of hunting elephant and just hope I’ll be able to do before anything more drastic happens.

Hunting the big five may not be the issue in the near future but bringing trophies home very well could be.

I suggest the eat things are going that it won’t be long!

I meant the way things are going

Interesting. I have given this subject much thought.

I keep coming back to the fact that our demographic is simply too small to matter. I have had discussions with some people I respect enough to believe, we are 15,000 on the high end. (International hunters).

Even if all 15,000 were in one politicians district, the number is simply too small. A politician has one goal and one goal only, re-election.

Look at POTUS Trump, he comes out and declares he is going to have his USFWS turn around the Elephant ban. Through considerable political pressure, he comes out and calls it a horror show.

I'm not a pessimist but can't deny what's in front of me.

I would say go now, don't look back.

Don't post a bunch of pictures of your trips. That is "in my opinion" what got us exactly where we are.

Had we adopted the phrase from the movie Fight Club, "The first rule of Fight Club, is don't talk about Fight Club." We likely would have more time in front of us than we do now. But, that ship had sailed and we have lost the fight over public perception.

Even rank and file American, Deer and Elk hunters have, by and large a negative opinion of hunting Elephants and the big cats.

Very well put- especially the Fight Club analogy. “Loose lips sinks ships” also comes to mind... I agree that by and large, the amount of US hunters that go to Africa is not quite as few as being just a couple grains of sand on the beach, but it is close to that...

So- if you are considering this- I would go yesterday. Just my thoughts.

I think this is spot on. The issue is will the import ban hurt the outfitters so much that they go do something else and minimize the opportunity/options for hunters.

I think Big 5 hunting will be around in some form for years. Maybe I am optimistic.

True for many reasons...

There have been plenty of shiny things that I have wanted that have stayed on the racks and shelves to pony up for my two hunts, and although PG hunts, it has made the world of difference.
I don't need the newest gear, clothing, or rifle anymore...I learned that after my first trip over which helped make my second trip coming this Friday possible. And hopefully let me book my Buff hunt come this fall.

Do what you need to now so that you may enjoy the hunts you have been looking forward to.

Trust me I'm trying, I'm saving up as much money as I can for a hunt but walking dogs isn't going to get me far in paying for an African hunt, sitting on 7 grand some are in stocks, silver, gold etc. but I'm not willing to blow it all away. Going to college at 18 hopefully becoming a petroleum engineer at 20-22 depending on getting a masters or not, but then once I get a job after taxes, insurance, and finding a house I probably won't be able to have significant money left over until 30. Let's hope hunting can hold out until then and even afterwards, I'll always hold out hope for the future but I'm sure the hunting in heavens better anyway.

I am pessimistic about hunting in general, anywhere.

Right now there are many areas in the world where you cannot hunt anymore, so my advice to any hunter would be, if you can afford it, do it now. Tomorrow may be too late.

My opinion (I am a petroleum major) - skip the masters unless you want to work for a major or a large service company on the R&D side. Get your bachelors and get to work - if you want a masters, a lot of companies have education reimbursement once your are employed. I know a lot of folks that have gotten an MBA or a masters in Petroleum Eng. for free, albeit while busting their ass to work a job and do an online degree. Plan right, and you can make Africa happen quicker than you think. Get debt free as soon as possible (house payment may be the lone exception). I only started seriously considering Africa after 30, but I am 32 and just made my first trip.

I do agree on the do it sooner than later philosophy, as many others have mentioned.

I agree with all of you up to this point. Too many people in the cities, not going to change, will only get worse. Facebook, posting your trophy pics on any social media site, instant communication with the world, all part of the same problem. A local deer hunter going out of his way to support one of us going to Africa, nope, many of them can't find Africa on a map or think they can't afford it, although it is very true that hunting in Africa is less expensive than many believe, even most of the anti-'hunters have this wrong. "Why would you want to kill an elephant?" I just suggest to everyone of the (15000) ? international hunters to ride this pony as long as your body or bank account allows!

@FLhunter7 don't get discouraged. You are further a long in planning than I was at your age. I honestly thought Africa would be one of my last trips due to the wrong assumption it was expensive. @cagkt3 gave you some solid advice, get your bachelor's, and get your company to pay for your Masters and I would go the MBA route. I got my MBA while working full time, and the nice part is you don't have any free time to spend money, lol. But you can make it happen, focus on the big 5 and get creative, I darted a rhino a loved it. I passed on a 54 inch kudu on that trip, which kind of haunts me but I don't regret it for a second. You might not be able to import the big 5 but I'm positive you will be able to hunt them in some form. My first trip to Africa was 29, and I am about to go on my third. Don't buy toys, keep focused and keep the dreaming, you will make it happen.

The future of hunting is you and your peers. Good on you for being financially responsible. I lived up to the stereotype of a jr enlisted Marine.
If you start now, the sky is the limit. I am 37, my truck and house is paid off, you will probably make more money than I have made by age 40 than you make by age 30. Don’t buy stupid stuff. Buy once, cry once.

Buy a bunch of land in a county full of other like minded individuals. Even if stuff turns for the worse in our country you can survive.
2020 will be my first trip.

I'm in pretty much the same boat, if a little further along. Currently just out of uni in my first job, buying a house sometimes this year with a decent portfolio of investments which I'm currently unwilling to spend.

Main thing is focus, as has been said. You're choosing a good degree with decent earning potential, now it's up to you. Get to the right Uni, get a first class degree, get a good job. After that it's a walk in the park (I'm told)...

In the mean time, you have to be pragmatic about it. I get to hunt a fair bit at the moment, even on a small budget, but you have to pick your hunts. Ask yourself, will you get more enjoyment out of that perfect DG hunt in 25 years time, or would you rather take a decent PG package in 5? Having done a limited amount of 'trophy' hunting and a lot more 'cull' trips, I can say that I at least get just as much enjoyment out of a day in the field after cull hinds as I do after a top quality stag. Can't imagine Africa would be any different. Plus, I can take 10 days on hinds for the price of one on stags. I'm in a position where I could potentially take a fortnight for a budget plains game hunt, or some driven boar etc, but DG? Unlikely.

My advice is take what you can when you can and be happy about it. If your budget only stretches to bunnies, then no bother. I spent many happy years blatting bunnies. Most people get economically better off as they get a bit older, but to miss out on a world of trips in pursuit of that One Perfect Trip may not be entirely wise, especially when, as you say, there's a chance that external forces may prevent it from ever materialising. Build up to it, enjoy what you can in the interim and be comforted that, in my opinion, it's almost guaranteed that there will be at least a few places where you can take the Big Five throughout our lifetime, it just depends on the cost you have to pay and if you feel that it's justifiable in light of whatever the population density is at that precise moment.

A final thought. A bit of your investment in the interim in terms of PG hunts in these areas will greatly increase the chance of DG oppurtunities still being available when you are in a position to take them. It's a win win!

. . .

Except all one has to do is read the stories here and other forums about the illegal hunting in Zimbabwe, and the graft of Zimbabwe and Tanzania, and perhaps Trump was right.
