SOUTH AFRICA: Incredible Hunt In South Africa With Kuche Safaris

What a day!! Congrats

I spend some qualitytime with a couple of beers at the skinning shed!
That became one of my favorite parts of the day. With five of us in the group it was great to stand around the skinning shed watching for headlights. Who is it, are they turning into the skinning shed or going to the lodge, what have they got in the truck? One of the most fun parts of my day!

What a day you had!!!

okay so Day three gets a little crazy. Kudu is all that is left on my list. so we head for a property that has several nice bulls. we arent there thirty minutes and we drive up on a bunch of females, then we spot a nice bull in the back of the group! I had not shot anything from the truck but dale says this is a great opportunity so I pull up the rifle and am watching through the scope. the group is maybe 80 or 90 yards out and prancing around. Dale says the bull is a nice one and if he presents a shot I should take it. A few seconds later the bull steps clear of the females and I have a very small window through the brush. he's moving but very slow and I'm feeling pretty confident after my last three animals so I squeeze! boom and every thing is running fifty different directions! I think it shocked dale he wasnt covering his ears or anything.
I apologized and asked if I should not have shot and he no problem he was just caught off guard. we discus the shot and dale say's it looked like it hit him hard. we give it some time and then go check the scene.
I told dale I might have hit him a little high because of the brush. we start tracking and find blood right away, that's good? so we keep tracking and we bust a bunch of females, we find blood not far away and Dale and christof think he has picked up a female. we keep tracking finding blood but not a lot. Dale says maybe I did hit him high because we're not finding much blood. We tracked him all the way through that block and half way into the next. the tracks are getting lighter the blood sparser and the grass thicker. and I am getting worried. I remeber hearing someone at camp talking about using a helicopter to find wounded animals and ask dale? he says that is an option and we discuss it. it is costly but dale agrees we would almost certainly find him. Since this was the top animal on my list and loosing him would be heartbreaking we make the call and get in touch with camp. They tell us ther happens to be a pilot on the adjoining property so hopefully we could find him fast with less cost. We wait for twenty minutes or so and the helicopter is so close I can actually hear them fire it up. when the helicopter sets down Dale goes and talks to the pilot. he comes back ans tells me three people would be to heavy to maneuver nimbly so I am going alone. the pilot has done this many time before and assures me will identify the right bull. so off we go. I've only been in one chopper before and nothing this small. we buckle in headsets on and the pilot explains what we will do. we fly the block in grids, there is stuff flushing out every where! I was concerned but I have to admit it was pretty cool! After flying the whole block we havent seen him so we fly the next block. still no wounded kudu so the pilot radios dale and dale says hi thinks he is still in the first block. we circle back and fly thar block again this time a little lower. We've covered 2/3 rds of the first block again and I am loosing my mind. and then out of a real dense thicket busts a male and female kudu. the pilot gats close and says that bull has been shot high on the shoulder. I cant see it so he gets in close and sure enough there is a hole about 8" down from his back. he flips the chopper to the other side and sure enough there is an exit hole. He radios Dale and he says if we are sure take him.
so we get in a good position and he tells me where to shoot the bull is running but he tells me not to lead him as we are going the same speed, I line up take the shot and he goes down. We land and of course I am ecstatic, until Dale walks up. He says thats not the bull. Myself and the pilot show him the holes which turn out to be an old wound, dale says he knows thats not the bull its just not the same bull.
so we go back up and fly for thirty minutes and never find the other bull. so the day ends kudu down just not the right kudu.

that is the bull I shot on the ground we recovered him two days later but not before the jackals and bugs had got him. Koos the owner of kuche gave me a great deal on the second kudu and we worked through every thing else so all in all every thing worked out. I just have two kud and a crazy story to tell, lol:W Cal 50:
Koos even had a spare cape that he donated, I am telling you this is a first class outfit

That is a wild one. Not many will have a story to match that.

I know unbelievable, what are the odds of a bull having been shot high on the shoulder flush when we are looking for another one? pretty damn good if you have my luck I guess,LOL

We will be hunting with Koos. Really have enjoyed reading about a recent hunt.
