I distinctly remember "my" bison at the Wilderness Hunting Lodge in Monterey Tennessee casually sauntering past me - almost ignoring me with no real eye contact. As she paused about 15-yards away, I shot the first time and she sauntered off. In my ongoing preparation for the African safari to seek a Cape Buffalo which may never happen. I bought myself several more African hunting books for Christmas. Contrast this experience with that of the 1950's writer Robert Ruark as noted in one of my new books: "I...looked at Mbogo (the buffalo) and Mbogo looked at me. He was 50- to 60-yards off; his head was low and his eyes stared right down into my soul. He looked at me as if he hated my guts. He looked at me as if I had despoiled his fiancee, murdered his mother and burned down his house. He looked at me as if I owed him money. I never saw such malevolence in the eyes of any animal or any human being before or since. So I shot him." I had to shoot my bison two more times with my 375 Holland & Holland until I got his attention. When he was processed, his chest area was like Grand Central Station. Her heart was nicked; my guide had told me to shoot behind the front leg which of course would miss the heart. Next time, I will take the heart shot!

I really like that quote. I wonder if you can see the whites of the bulls eyes at that range? Do they even have whites? What if they looked really far to the left? Maybe an experienced buff hunter can weigh in here.

I'll be hunting bison in the near future. Pigs, deer, and Auodad for 2017. So it looks like 2018 for bison. I really love bison meat, and they make a great looking euro mount. Also an excuse to buy another gun. I guess one could buy a .54 Hawkin, .50-90, or .45-70 for nostalgia sake. But I'll be getting the .375 H&H for the same reason as the thread title... Bison to Buffalo.

wise choice.

it is behind the front leg,but very low,on the rubbed spot.

For the same reason, in my "Cowboy Phase" I bought a Shiloh Sharps and a CS Sharps in 45-70, but the former is too heavy for hunting.

My wife has agreed to accompany me to the Dallas Safari Club exposition this year and I intend to visit Tanzanian operators. Might as well dream big!

William dreams do come true.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
