Wanted 404 Jeffery For Safari Or 300 Rum

Hey guys,
Going on my 1st safari next September in Zimbabwe. Had considered a 416 remington but really always loved the classic 404 jeffery. Figured i see if anyone had one to sell?
Like it to be CRF, iron sights as well as drilled for a scope mount and prefer a barrel band. I see a few posts down i just missed a great rifle at a great price. Whoever bought it if ya want to sell it?
Would also consider a 300 rum model 70 but smith says it could take 6 months so prefer one built.

Take a look at the Ruger 416 Guide Gun. Not overly expensive and will do anything you want in Africa.

Finding a M70 in .300RUM is challenging to say the least. I tried for a long time and finally gave up. I don't know what your budget is, but if I was wanting one built I'd be on the phone with Wayne at American Hunting Rifles.

Take a look at the Ruger 416 Guide Gun. Not overly expensive and will do anything you want in Africa.

IMO if he truly wants a 404 J, no modern caliber will make him happy........although money could end up changing his mind!!!!

where are you situated ? I know of an immaculate Cogswell and Harrison , ex Rhodeasian Game scout rifle in 404 J that will be coming up for sale .

Sorry guys i should have been more specific. 1st, I did find a 300 rum for 800.00 but before building a jeffery i thought id see if I could fine one done. But if someone had a 300 rum for less than 800, well thats always good.. Building will take 4 to 6 months and 3 to 4 grand according to my smith.
Not really interested in a single shot. If i end up going with 416 rem it will likely be a mod 70 with a little work done to it. But kinda have my heart set on that 404.
Cabelas had 2 404s but one was ported and on an unknown action and other was a cz 550 action. Closeups showed some rust and a possible lack of care and both were 5 grand. Nutn wrong with cz but i didnt want the extra long action. Same reason i didnt want a rigby.
Just something about a typical "safari" grade 404..

Cogswell and Harrison are English builders for over 200 years. If the rifle was used in Rhodesia, they became Zimbabwe in 1980 + or - a couple of years. The rifle is likely much older but may still be a good deal if already in the U.S. If it is in Africa or England, expect another $1000 dollars in cost to get it to you. If these English guns and rifles have been taken care of they are good for another 100 years in many cases. If it were used by game scouts, it may be in less than desirable condition. But I would sure look into to it. If it's in good shape, expect around $3000 and possibly much higher. In more recent years, the company has changed hands many times and the new rifles are not the same in quality or value as the old IMO! Good luck with your decision and purchase.

What's the current price on the .404, and I have forgotten, was it still set up for a scope, or was that changed when you had the custom work?

I love the M70 action, but really am into the RSM's. I plan to do a project to convert one to 404 but that is on the back burner for now. I've also got a Winchester Classic M70 in 300 RUM that I purchased to convert to 404 but still liking it as a 300 RUM! And I have a CZ in 404 that I have not even shot yet.

Of all of those, the RSM is what I desire the most. Never noticed any difference in action length when shooting game with any of the above three action of which I have hunted in various calibers.

The RSM action is no longer manufactured so that sets it apart a bit to me, and Ruger had plans to chamber it in 404 but screwed up as there are a couple different specs out there for the caliber...... So to have an RSM in 404 makes it that little bit extra special, to me at least.

@Iloutdoorsman you asked for an RSM that you can have ready to go for your Safari... I fully understand the love for the caliber and the M70 style action. And Dave's RSM may be sold before you decide...... In any case, love the discussion of fine old calibers, big DG hunting, fine wood stocks and blued metal All Classic Africanna

Have you ever had a problem with your Ruger Bolt smashing your trigger finger? I've heard of some complaints of this with big bores because of the dog leg shape to the bolt handle.

I don't really have a problem with the longer action. In the past I have had many issues getting Scopes to fit. I'm not really a fan of extended rings that would have to be used with their proprietary Ruger mount. So I was just looking for the shorter action to give me a little more play when mounting a scope. I have considered just buying a 416 Rigby given that I had Optics that would fit.
I guess at this point I just kind of have something stuck in my mind of what I'm looking for.

No, and the one I shoot the most is one that has been converted to 505 Gibbs. Love that gun and caliber! But the RSM is at it's best in 416 Rigby, IMO.

I have never had a Ruger bolt on the Rigby or .375 H&H cause a problem. The only similar problem I have had was the rear of the trigger guard on my M70 .458 super grade. It is far too light for that caliber. I will have it for sale as soon as I get home. First on AH and then to a shop on consignment if necessary.
