Guide Gun range report

I just checked Midway USA has 416 Ruger brass in stock ready to ship. Hope that helps.

I never knew that there were two different 416 rugers. One was made by B.E.L.L. based on the old rigby case for the late Bill Ruger the other is the new one on a totally different case..... interesting

I took my Guide Gun along to Wyoming again this fall, not too much to report though. I only got to shoot one shot out of it. My son was with me when we spotted this buck, I asked him to range it for me since he bought a new range finder at Cabela's on the way out. When he said 258 yards I just grinned since I was already prone with my gun resting on my back pack and it is shot in for 250 yards. All I needed to do was settle the crosshairs on the crease behind his shoulder and squeeze the trigger. He was quartered away and standing uphill slightly, the bullet entered just behind his right shoulder and exited with authority out the left side of his brisket. A few leaps and it was over. The suppressor is a nice little addition, no booming echo through the canyon and after the shot we found the canyon full of deer looking around to see what was going on instead of running for their lives.

Here's one more for the Guide gun in West Virginia. He came off the mountain behind my stand just before sunset, running like he was carrying the mail. He was headed for the thick stuff in the bottom next to the river. I had about a second to make up my mind and shoot before he disappeared. I don't remember too much about the shot or where I was aiming and all of that, I just remember hearing the bullet hit him and seeing him collapse in his tracks. Shooting with a suppressor on is really amazing, I just wish that I would have bought one before I lost 3/4 of my hearing. I know that he's not the biggest deer in the world but I really wanted to shoot one more buck before I go in for hernia surgery next week. Because after that I'm pretty sure my hunting season will be over for this year.

Sorry I don't have a good picture but a young nephew and Godchild of ours borrowed my wife's Ruger Guide Gun in 30-06 with Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x32 to hunt antlerless whitetail. M I sighted it in with that Hornady lite ammo and had the stock spacers out so it fit him well. That is a solid and heavy gun for it's compact size, but quick and easy handling. I had also taken him a Ruger Mark II in 243 and scoped the same... But it has a full sized LOP and Jaden decided to use the '06.

He was on stand by himself with only 5 minutes of daylight left. A big doe stepped out and he made a great shot, right through the heart at 275 yards... It was actually measured out. This was his first year deer hunting but his second deer as he had taken one earlier in South Dakota with his grandfather and a 27o win.

A side note on the Minnesota deer, his farther was 180 miles from home working and I was actually up in the same area... So Jaden's mom had to gut it and get it hung.... They hung it from the swingset in the back yard... They have a nice little woods and had been seeing 3 deer in there all year but no bucks so it was up to Jaden with his youth licence to put meat in the freezer. He did a great job delivering!

Suppressor/Guide Gun question for you, JD...is the rifle threaded standard 5/8x24? Could the can just be screwed on directly? I can't tell what kind of can/mount you have...some have a QD system; maybe that was why you needed an adapter made? Just wondering of a standard 5/8x24 can would screw right onto the threaded barrel? Nice deer, nice rifle, and nice shooting!

Unfortunately they don't use a 5/8 thread, I don't remember the exact thread size but I think it was a 7/16 thread. My gunsmith took a piece of stainless steel barrel stock and made an adapter for me.

That's nice, I used to hunt in West Virginia, up by Coopers Rock State Forest. Killed some deer there too

It has crossed my mind that a Ruger Guide Gun in .30-06 would be a very handy little rifle to throw in the truck for trips to farm and such. I had convinced myself that I didn't really need one, but reading through this thread and seeing how well jduckhunter's shoots makes me want one that much more. The lines between want and need are beginning to blur.

:A Stirring:

Me and my Guide Gun did it again today in West Virginia. I know he's not exactly what you would call trophy material, but he should be great on the table. The land owner of the property that I hunt on instituted a 6 point or bigger rule last year, so when this guy showed up I radioed him and told him what I had in front of me. He said that it sounds like a cull buck and that I should use my own judgement. Bang! And it was all over, the 165 grain bullet destroyed his heart and lungs. Now I can just relax and I don't have to go back out in that cold, windy weather any more. Life is good for a few more days.

I also have the Ruger guide gun in 375 Ruger and love it. I posted photos some time ago using Hornady factory 270 SP. At 100 yards my groups were just over 1 inch. Very tough to beat, but I will not use Hornady ammo if I have the chance on DG.

Hey congrats! Looks like garlic stuffed venison is on the menu!!!

Got to love a guide gun and the work it does!

I too have a 375 Ruger and for DG it's Woodleigh 300 gr softs first and then Hornady 300 gr solids. That worked for my son and I.
