Was watching a driven game you tube video and noted this brand of double rifle, they have their own cartridge, the 425 African Scheiring. Interesting, wont replace my "want" for a Heym 89b in .500 NE but I thought it was worth posting here for the discussion.

The tradition of all these Austrian gunsmiths lies in the Alpine region, not in the African bush. The very baroque design of the rifles reflects this. The builders of rifles for Africa and India of the German-speaking countries were primarily located in Suhl/Germany, not in Ferlach/Austria. Sure, everyone is trying to catch a part of the market nowadays.

The cartridge 425 African Scheiring seems to be a suitable one for big game hunting, but with such cartridges you have to stock up for the rest of your life because they are in relation to one particular rifle maker and can disappear with him.

When I was young and was taken “up north” to bird camp, deer camp and rabbit camp. The Austrian and Hungarian hunting culture was by far the most influential in my family’s hunting and their friends hunting circles.

There’s something very gothic looking about the rifle. Not necessarily a bad thing, but just not for me.

My favorite Austrian gun maker would have to be Franz Sodia. He used to make some really good double rifles.

There is a video with the caliber and rifle 425 Africa alos with the hunt,

Also Franz-Albrecht is using such a double rifle (not this caliber) - the rifle opening system allows to save a lot time in reloading: look at 5:00 drivenhunt with double rifle + reloading

In one of the "Buffalo fever video", where Franz-Albecht is hunting in Uganda wiht Mr. Scheiring.

Mr. Scheiring is also making vierling - rifle with 4 barrels!

I never realistically wanted to be a millionaire until I saw this rifle, LOL! What a beauty.

However, is that new caliber a killer rather than a "stopper" ?

An underlever? Nice. If they would make a less ornamental version, I think it would be a really nice choice for a DG double.

For advertising purposes it would have been better to show a buffalo hunt where the buffalo is killed with one shot, rather than a buffalo that runs away after the first shot and then go down in a hail of bullets. Everything is not very convincing, gives an inexperienced hunter a bad impression of buffalo hunting and does not demonstrate the good working of this cartridge.

Scheiring produces fantastic rifles and will chamber for just about any cartridge. I have been to Herbert's shop and seen the quality firsthand. They have an underground shooting range, so testing is just a short walk out the front door. Their action design will handle very high-pressure cartridges. Their wood room is the best that I have seen followed closely by Borovnik's wood selection. Anyone interested in their rifles should take a trip to Ferlach. You will not regret the trip.

I am not in that pay grade, but his daughter has been at every Jagd and Hund I have ever visited. I look, but I am not going to buy a $50,000-300,000 rifle. So I don't give it more than a cursory look. I have spoken to her a couple of times very quickly at the show.

I will also say that am normally there at the end of the show, so everyone is pretty callous at that point. She is usually a grumpy bear, but I think it is more an issue of being worn down by the show than her actual personality.

I sent her an email when I was researching Ferlach gunsmithing books. She answered within about 8 minutes with a good answer. So nothing but praise from this Jager.

Not one to kick tires for things I am not going to buy. If that is your thing, she will probably suffer fools for a bit.

Nobody seems to be commenting on the regulation of these rifles. That 10 shot group at 75 m is something I have never seen before from a double rifle. Granted my experience with double rifles is mostly limited to reading about them.

Regulation on most modern doubles is laughable. Open the box and and the buyer is supposed to be happy with a two shot 3.5 inch "group" at 50 meters that may or may not be crossing. My lamentably discontinued Blaser S2 will put 4 non-crossing shots (LxR / LxR) into 2.5 inches at 100 yards with each of its three sets of barrels (30-06, 375, and 500/416). Each individual barrel shoots MOA or better. I have killed game with it from 25 yards to nearly 250.

Interestingly, so will my Suhl built 9.3x74R from the twenties. It was equipped with claw mounts and an ancient scope. JJ Perodeau built new rings and did not have to touch the regulation. It has taken a bear in BC at nearly 150 yards.

Even if it’s not your thing 10,000 pounds was a steal. What would it cost now to be made?
A new Scheiring will run $100k or more fully engraved. If the one at Holt's actually sold for 10K pounds (plus the juice) someone got a very good deal. They are extremely well-built firearms.

Nice rifles! I should not have sold my S-2. I thought I could replace it easily, and that has not been the case.

Hi PaulB,
I have a Ballard Arms Model 1885 chambered for .333 Jeffery Flanged. Do you have any idea where I can get ammo for this?

I am new to this forum so I am sorry if I am doing something wrong!
Thank You!
