What I "should have bought"/What I "shouldn't have sold"

I probably should have kept a Ruger M77 tang safety .300wm. I later replaced it with a Tikka but it was just buying and selling opportunistically to do something different at the time.
I should have kept a CZ550 in .458wm that I purchased new and sold to buy a second hand.375H&H but I didn’t have the cashflow and didn’t see a need for both or the potential increase in value

I’ve had shares I should have bought cheap and some I should have dumped when they were high but I’m only dabbling in those and still learning.

Unfortunately and very regrettably, it is true. It without any doubt is my worst gun decision.

It too is my favorite movie, I watch it a few times a year. The book is even better than the movie. If you like the movie, the book is a must read.

Wow. I feel for you. Some decisions you just don’t get a second chance on in life…

That is a tough one. Happy hunting, TheGrayRider a.k.a Tom.

In the early 90s, I was single, and in the process of buying a single family home. I had a 2 BR condo I had sold, and was renting a one bedroom efficiency while the house was being built. The owner of Lister’s Jewelry in Coral Gables was a Breitling dealer. I had already purchase two watches from him. I was picking up a watch that was being serviced. He showed me a Breitling Emergency watch, that was commemorating the air ballon that had gone around the world. It had a piece of the material and a beautiful case. No one had any interest in the watch and he wanted to move it. So, he asked me if I wanted to buy it. One draw back was that you had to be a pilot, or something like that. The fact that I was in the Air Force, made me eligible. He wanted $3500.00 for the watch, and retail was like $5500.00. I passed since I was buying a house. That watch now is more than triple the retail price. Oops. I made more money when I sold the house. :D

Should have kept that 2000 model 70 in 375 and also an old #1 in 7x57. What an idiot I was to sell both.

Oh, and there was that absolutely mint FN action i was given that should be a 458 win mag at the moment.

That drove home a painful lesson. There are a few things that were not wise purchases in my life, but the decisions I really regret are unique pieces like that piece or a piece of art I did not buy and later deeply regret.

1981- Just starting flight school and I found 4 Colt Sauer rifles in a Dothan, AL. ($600 ea) Tried to talk a buddy into one guy going in to buy two and try to save some money. He wouldn't go for it so I passed. Smoothest action I ever experienced in a bolt rifle.

Well, we've all done both and it sometimes hurts.
Should have bought: Double rifles from Billy Hodges in Dallas back when Kynoch went out of business and guns sold cheap because no one thought they could feed them. Was offered a very pristine double (forgetful these days, but either a Lang or Manton) with great case colors like a safe queen for $5ooo flat. Ouch, because I was short at the time
Should not have sold: My Greener Facile Princeps 12 bore--sold it to finance Africa so less regret. Still, I miss that old gun! Should not have sold DRGM double Kersten locked double in 9.3x74R that shot lights out at 100 yds any day of the week. Same reason for selling, but I have the Euro mount of the buffalo it provided for...

I guess if I wasn't limiting this discussion to guns, I might add a 1959 Mercedes 190SL offered at $2500--the price of the mechanics lien for the brand new engine. Sigh. If I told you why I turned it down, you would all sigh, but it's just too painful to tell it again.
I have ran into a few deals like a gold de 44 mag kit with 3 barrel length in the case but the short one was missing at a very good price. That the reason I didn’t buy it it was hot type price.

I did not buy a 95%+ Parker 16 gage shotgun.
The reason the old lady selling it though it was just some old shotgun her husband had.
I told her of the gun shop she should go sell it. Because I just could not buy it for 100$ yea stupid but I fell ok about it.

Most of my miss outs were the price that you could buy comman guns for back in the day.
Compared to what they go for now.
I had quite a few m1 carbines and cheap 1894 Brit 303 and the such
One that I really miss was a ww2 Walther pp 32 with the N markings
You know 50-75$ guns here in the late 80s

An acquaintance tried to get me to buy bitcoin at $500 per. And again at a thousand. Refused to buy what I viewed as a scam. Still view it as that but woulda been a cool one.

Most regret was a M1941 Johnson in excellent condition, all original including bayonet. It was a good price but decided to be responsible…….regretted it the next day and still do.

Luckily nothing much I regret selling. All that I’ve sold have been for nicer or rarer guns, or guns that didn’t meet expectations
That bitcoin thing.
I don’t understand it
I don’t know how that kind of stuff works.
I had people try to talk me into it to.

I saw a johnson rifle up for auction just 3 weeks ago, with bayonet. also a large amount were dumped in to a swamp pond on Guadal canal simpley because the colonel thot they were a piece of junk and didnt want his troupes depending on them.

A few years ago my local shop had a Dakota 76 Traveler take-down in 30-06 for $2500, I knew it was a steal I just didn't really need it. Should've bought it...

Last summer I had the chance to buy a mint Rolex Sea Dweller for $6500.

About 15 years ago I sold a beautiful SVI Infinity 45acp double stack for $1200 (What I paid for it used)

I should never have sold my AHR custom 505 Gibbs.

I should have bought a CZ 550 in 458 Lott when they were still in production. I kept telling my self that id buy one later... Then they stopped making them.

And yes... I should have bought into bitcoin.

I put off buying from cdnn a cz 40 they made for colt a cz bobwhite in 16ga and a 50-95 Winchester Copy and a ruger 480
The Russian 30-06 double rifle
Back when they sent catalog out. And they were good price for then much less now I don’t thank they wonted more than 600 for the most expensive one then.

So sorry to hear that. Hopefully life has taken a better turn for you.
My wife is the best. She not only supports my enjoyment of hunting, guns, and bows, but she wants to participate. She encourages me to take time, even when we’re really busy, to spend time at the river or in the woods. She practically made me buy a blind one day so we could hunt together and with the boy. At one point in our budgeting we were each setting aside a few bucks every pay cycle for hobbies etc. For my birthday last year she surprised me with a set of waders for duck hunting. She had squirreled away all of her budget for months and months to buy me those waders. (I made her an apron from fabric and braintanned deer hide and embroidered flowers on the fabric by hand. I’m not showing that poor attempt at art here, but she loves it.)

The right woman, my woman, is the one thing I’m glad I got correct. It makes all the difference in the world, especially since we both love and follow Christ, and makes all the drama of the past with goofy women insignificant water under the bridge. I love my wife more than hunting.

My Grandfather always told me to buy gold , early 1980’s told me buy one coin a month. I didn’t listen. Bought some Sub $300 oz. I would have been set if I listened.- When you’re 20 you think you know everything But then again I also sold my 1970 Torino 429 SCJ in 1985 for 5k That was the market value then.

Hi PaulB,
I have a Ballard Arms Model 1885 chambered for .333 Jeffery Flanged. Do you have any idea where I can get ammo for this?

I am new to this forum so I am sorry if I am doing something wrong!
Thank You!
