Explain this: 270 wins the poll

A different mouse trap not necessarily better.

I’m just only making reference to the concept that it’s a cartridge designed to be effective from a short barrel and the .270 is stir good and still run around the original specs
The cartridge design and recommended twist rate etc are optimised to get the most from the cartridge. It runs higher pressure and is offered in a suitable twist rate for the projectile weight range.

I’m not on the Creedmoor bandwagon either but it does make the most of what they learned about ballistics optimising the rate of twist to a purpose designed cartridge for long range use getting better downrange drop and drift characteristics than cartridges that that pre-date it

Damn I'm good.

Lots less bearing surface on Spitzers or semi-Spitzers.

If they'd have made 270W with a 8 or even 9 twist originally, I'd probably consider them to be something worth owning rather than as useless as teats on a frog. A 170 gr Spitzer in .277 would be quite something, right up there with 175 gr in .284. Which I consider the most perfect small and medium game bullet ever invented, with a close 2nd place to 155-160 gr 6.5 pills.

Were it possible, I hate 270 more than @Bob Nelson 35Whelen hates 243.
@sgt_zim
Is that possible.
I don't like the 270 either. All noise and not much use in my book.
It ain't doing nothing a good/ fast 25 will do.

Arrived here in Africa a week ago. Left all my guns at home to streamline travel and stay away from the hassle. In camp, two rifles were offered, a .300 Win Mag or a .270. Having this thread in mind, I jumped on the .270. Here's my kudu from just a few nights ago. The load was a 150 Sierra GameKing and it passed through the ribs at 120 yards. This was the largest bodied kudu bull I've taken, and

Damn... the photo won't load with the lodge wifi.

Finally, the photo loaded.

Wow ! Hell of a Kudu, congratulations! I had a bad experience with the 130 grain Sierra GameKing in my .270, maybe the 150s are better. The 130 grenaded on a small deers shoulder, only a small fragment penetrated into chest cavity. Looks like the 150 worked well for you.

The 150 Gameking load is the PH's creation. I have no idea what the powder type or charge is. Regardless, it is what he hands his clients to use, and has for many years.
Thanks for the compliments on the kudu bull. The carcass was huge and quite the talk at dinner tonight.

Well done, I’m not surprised the venerable .270 shares the same bloodline as the ambitious .35Whelen

@CBH Australia
Yes the 270 is the bastard offspring of the Whelen. The ought six may be the parent of both but the Whelen is the epitome of ought six off shoots followed by the 25-06 and 280.

Hey Bob @Bob Nelson 35Whelen, I’m an “inglorious bastard” so I like my .270 WINCHESTER. Although, I do like my .25-06 Remington too. Both for deer and pronghorn.

I've been shooting 150g Partitions at 3000 fps through my BDL in 270 Win for decades. Rem cases neck sized, CCI 250 primers, 150 Partitions and fill the case with H4831 (not for the faint of heart). Kills elk like lightning hit them. Longest shot (not far by todays standards 500 yards), most are between `15 and 300 yards. I use my 500 Jeffery on elk now, cause I can :)

Popped these couple of rabbits in the head last evening with my CZ Brno in 270. One at 115 yards and the other at 95 yards.
That's why the 270 is so popular,to many rabbits, great on ground hogs too and small deer of coarse.:)

Good morning John, I just read your setup procedure for the northstar duplicator ator. I found it very hand and I did learn some things. I have the same machine and I am having a problem i can not figure out and was hoping you could shed some light on the subject.
