Report Scam in AH Classifieds

GOT SCAMMED BY THIS GUY "Lon Cov" EMAIL ADDRESS "loncov54@hotmail.com" FOR SOME AMMO

HE SAID SEND PMT THROUGH PAYPAL FRIENDS & FAMILY TO EMAIL ADDRESS "JRA4.COM8884@GMAIL" - THAT CAME UP AS "JAMES ALLEN" FROM PAYPAL AS A VERIFIED EMAIL ADDRESS.

THEN NEVER HEARD FROM HIM AGAIN AND NO REFUND AVAILABLE WHEN PAID FRIENDS & FAMILY

FROM A DIFFERENT CONTACT EMAIL ADDRESS (STILL ME) HE OFFERED THE SAME AMMO WITH PAYMENT TO BE SENT TO "Todd Reed, 2011 Queens highway, Kerhonkson NY 12446"

THIS GUY IS AN EXPERT - IN THE FIRST CONTACT HE EVEN SAID HE LIVED IN A CITY HERE IN WISCONSIN ABOUT 3 HOURS AWAY, AND OFFERED LOCAL PICK-UP FOR CASH, BUT PREFERRED TO BE PAID THROUGH PAYPAL TO SAVE ME THE DRIVE.

IN THE SECOND CONTACT HE SAID THE SAME THING BUT THIS TIME HE LIVED IN CALIFORNIA AND THE MONEY WAS BEING SENT TO HIS COUSIN IN NEW YORK

I GOT HIS PHONE NUMBER BUT HE DOESN'T ANSWER (769) 225-7144 - IT GOES TO VOICE MAIL AND DOES NOT ALLOW MESSAGES

NOT SURE HOW TO CATCH THIS GUY
@buckstix, No records on AH matched this account Lon Cov and also not that email address loncov54@hotmail.com. Not sure what is going on here, did this person contact you through the PM system?

HE SAW MY WANT AD HERE - BUT NOT SURE HOW HE CONTACTED ME ... I FOUND THIS THREAD BY SEARCHING THE ADDRESS "Todd Reed, 2011 Queens highway, Kerhonkson NY 12446" AND SAW THAT ANOTHER MEMBER HERE SENT PMT TO THE SAME ADDRESS .... JUST WANTED TO WARN ALL BECAUSE THIS GUY IS AN EXPERT SCAMMER - NOW I ALWAYS ASK FOR A PHONE NUMBER AND A PICTURE OF THE SELLER'S DRIVERS LICENSE PLACED NEXT TO THE ITEM I'M BUYING.

Your email is on your website and want to buy ads are an open invitation to getting scammed. Demanding PPF&F is another red flag. Photos, drivers licenses, etc. can be photoshopped edited to look legit.

It was Dabshooter who Dm'd me on the WTB NECG CZ rings and told me to e-mail his friend who had a set that he was sure he would sell, and his e-mail was also Loncov54@hotmail.com. I got suspicious and went back to my DMs and he had deleted it. Both were new members and no posts, that's what raised the flag with me.

I went through the members log last week and found Dabshooter, he didn't have any posts.
This thief is good.

Another red flag, "My buddy has one he'd sell, here's his email address". PSA, it's the same person.

The other often used scam starts - "I am posting this for my buddy or I am selling for a friend".
Never had the go well.

The "helpful" scammer. It works. Be careful everyone.
In a helpful community it makes it easy to hide amongst the decent folks.

this guy ... Andy Rosamilia is a member here ... he sent me a PM in answer to my want ad for a 10.75x68 Mauser ... he sent me pictures of the rifle and wanted $2100 paid via wire transfer ... an obvious scam

the pictures he sent me were from this rifle that sold 2 years ago for $7000

Compromised account? I'm afraid to ask how they do that. I have a hard enough time typing and now we have AI to contend with.

@Paul K thx for bringing up this question for me to clarify.

What is a compromised account?
A compromised account refers to any account that is accessed by an unauthorized user with login details.

We have had a few of these over the years, not very many but it happens that scammers gain access to someone's passwords though data dumps from large scale data breaches (like Facebook, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Target, etc.). The lesson is DO NOT use the same username and/or password for multiple accounts.

Just for your own online safety I would highly recommend reading this: https://www.africahunting.com/threads/ah-malware-scan-comes-back-clean.68672/

Anyone stupid enough to fall for these scammers probably should not be allowed to own guns. Definitely should not be hunting. I once had a similarly brain dead guy hunting with me walk up on my pointing Lab with his gun shouldered. He almost had to walk back to town. I should emphasize he only hunted with me ONCE!

Don't be in a hurry to buy or sell online. Check it out. Recently saw a successful sale on here to a newby one-timer. It happens. But vendor was very cautious, almost to the point of accusing him of being a scammer. The prospective buyer took it well and made efforts to establish his authenticity. As I recall he eventually drove a substantial distance to make the transaction in person. Vendor expressed his appreciation on the forum. It seems the "wanted to buy" ads get hit hard by scammers. Presumably these fraudsters conclude the poster is in a pinch for something or other. Items for sale by new posters are always suspicious and mods usually key in on them quickly. Anyone answering to a classified with "Hey buddy ..." should automatically go in the trash. Those clowns just as well paint a bullseye on their arse!"

Buyer and seller beware. People are deceptive and use subtle techniques to get you to commit. Don’t be in such a hurry. Vet the person in a way you can confirm their ID and the actual item being sold. Known references are helpful. If you are selling, confirm the payment has cleared before you ship. It’s simple. Remove the emotion and work through it…

When I saw your WTB add I knew it was going to be like flies to honey. I've never had productive luck on the Internet with WTB adverts. 99% of the respondents sign up to defraud you by supplying demand. A sad fact of the world we live.

Not sure where you are going with this, but scammers are sophisticated and getting harder to spot all the time.
I was scammed on 24hrcampfire. Here is how it happened.
Someone post an ad for a scope. The ad looked fine and had pictures. Price was reasonable.
I contacted them and got a solid response, then sent the money order. Then nothing.

Turns out they had been lurking there for a bit, over 6 months, had sold a couple of items, and had 100 posts. This scope was $1000.
Turns out that this was a set up and I was not the only once scammed. The "seller" was a guy in a mobile home in Colorado who was not connected to the website. He was told by his online romance that she was expecting some money and that he would get the money order. He was to cash it and send it to her keeping $100 of it.
"She" was from India or Pakistan as it turned out, and had been doing this regularly on various websites. She copied pictures and descripbtions from successful sales that previous occurred, then created a posting. When someone reached out, they we given the CO address and then nothing happened.

My good fortune was that I knew a former cop in the area, called him and had him go to the scammers address. The poor guy had no idea what was going on and told the cop the story - met her online, was in love, she needed money and this was how she got it. He had no idea he was part of the scam.

I got my money back but most are not that lucky.

So, all of this to say, be careful.. Check out everything you can. If there is a doubt, do not send money.

So - Ontario, I don't feel stupid, don't act stupid and have a lot of guns. Yet, nearly got scammed. So please don't paint everyone with the "you are too stupid" brush.....

Many thanks to the moderator on Africa Hunting.
The accounts of the scammers I reported have been deleted.
They are no longer in my message history.
