I have twice hunted Hungary and each time been stunned by the country, the hunting culture and the game management. The roebucks there are great, the stags are huge, and boar are immense. The outfitter I hunt with there seems to have this incredible network that stretches back to the dark days of communism when my sense is that there were systems within systems and the guys who survived that time seem to have emerged with an incredible hunting network. They know everyone and thus where all the great animals are located. I shot one of my stags around the Zelic mountains, and another two hours away in Vízvár near the Croatian border. I’m going back to this part of the world in October. I got one of the bear permits for Romania, and also will hunt chamois in the Carpathians. If you go to Hungary, I do not think that you will regret it.
