Heym 88B 500NE

Congrats to buyer and seller. NO ONE has ever rejected a Heym. They work every time and are totally reliable. I in my self-important fake authority position proclaim this the best double on AH in the past year. At least 5 people called me about this gun lamenting it wasn't "cheaply discounted". Every person, I told them you get what you pay for and you won't be disappointed if you buy it. Glad to hear it stayed in the AH family.

Hate to see this go but I have a to fund a expensive hunt coming up. Heym 88B 500NE. Case colored Action, Elephant head top lever, ejectors, LOP 15 1/4", with upgraded wood. This rifle is in excelled condition, some minors scuff marks. Bluing is perfect on both barrels not single scratch, absolute beautiful case hardening. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like more detailed photos. Will include reloading components if needed. Asking 23K obo

If i hadnt already purchased a handgun with the same power, i'd probably be after this piece. Absolutely gorgeous!

I spent far more than $23k buying 4 DRs. Each with some detail that kept me looking for the next one. I learned the hard way a DR is no place to try and save money.
So I went back to magazine rifles.

And now get my SxS fix with 100 year old shotguns.

I hade a similar, allthought light-version experience...going through three doublerifles, all bought second hand, I ended up commissioning a custom Mauser M98 in .375 HH to be my do-all-rifle in the future whenever big game is concerned. Both domestic (Moose, Brown Bear, Wild Boar and Red Stag) and of course for future travels abroad.

My side-by-side fix is handled by my custom side-by-side shotgun, a RFM/Upland Gun company model Venus in 20 gauge. As it happens, this also takes care of my main aesthetic reservation of a double rifle, the need (for me at least) to scope it to be able to fully utalize it which makes it looking far less attractive/classical (again for me)...no need to scope a shotgun!:giggle:

Been there, almost done that...
I have three double rifles and have owned and passed on another three.
My first double is the one I will either die with, or pass on as an heirloom should one of my stepdaughters find a good hunting man. I can dream, can't I? :) It is my Heym 88B in 458 Win. Yes, the 458 WIn is a high pressure, rimless cartridge and not optimum for a double, but this is a Heym...

I've passed on two Merkels and a Chapuis.
Below are my present doubles from top to bottom.
  • Blaser S2 in 375 H&H, a wonderfully accurate double rifle. If there ever was a do it all double, the out of production S2's would be it!
  • Krieghoff Classic in 500/416, I really, really like this rifle but I love my trusty Heym! I keep thinking about listing this one for sale... It's not fair to treat this double as second place. It should be someone's first love!
  • Heym 88B made in 1986 in 458 Win. With the Trijicon SRO this is a proven 100 yard accurate double for plains game. I will reserve my dangerous game shooting for closer ranges in which they are truly dangerous.

In the end, there is nothing so versatile as a bolt action magazine rifle. Simple and effective they are. Want to shoot a solid out to 100 yards and a lighter soft point out to 300 yards? It should be as simple as knowing the "dope" (point of impact or clicks on your wiz-bang modern scope) or swapping scopes.

If one wants a double for close range dangerous game and out to 200 yards for plains game, a 450/400 or 500/416 with a quick detachable scope using either claw or side swing pivot mounts would be the best options, in my opinion. That is of course if those doubles are regulated for proper load/bullets for both close range and as far as 200 yards.

Hello Rookhawk. I am the buyer of the Heym being discussed. First it was a pleasure meeting Skshyk and aside from representing the rifle accurately we had a great time talking about our passion hunting. My belief is you get what you pay for and the rifle is worth every penny. Coincidentally we were in Tanzania at about the same time and if it wasn’t for flight cancellations out of Atlanta we would have met up in the same hotel in Dar. Small world. I did practice at the range with my Heym prior to taking it hunting and I can now say it was extremely accurate and deadly on the two buffalo I took. I’m already looking forward to using it again in Uganda next March for Nile Buffalo.

It’s great to see this AH New Member come in hot with a great DR purchase which he put to use in short order. Well done!
