Allure of the Ruger No1

A rebarrel/custom build in 500Jeff might be inadvisable because of its rebated rim, just about everything else seems to have been done already.

I don't know of another falling block or farquharson type rifles that even have an ejector. Is there another that someone is aware of?
Yes, the Winchester and the Browning 1885s have ejectors that can be set by the user to eject left or right or to simply extract the case. Nice rifles.

Shot the new 30-06 No1 at the range yesterday, it is a delightful little gun. We worked up a load that gives 2670 fps with a 180 grain accubond and it is very accurate indeed. The Swarovski Z6i EE is so correct for this rifle, really comfortabke to use, thank you to all on AH who advised me on this, then helped me to find and buy one in the US, and to Doug and Geoff who brought it over for me. It is not easy to get a rifle and accessories to Zimbabwe, which makes it all the more rewarding when it happens. Boy am I looking forward to hunting with this rifle.

I’m glad it worked for you Kevin. I’ve messed with a lot of scopes on No 1’s. That is by far the best solution I’ve found if the magnification suits your purpose.

Thanks, I didn't know this. I did a bit of "The Google" , looked at schematics and such, interesting how that works.

They also cock on opening. Useful if your trying to shoot a second time or loading to shoot.

The quest was to get a bush pig to put together a game Christmas feast and we duly set out in Carruthers to a farm in the Lomagundi area to perform the deed. The afternoon outing showed plenty of sign of the pigs raiding the maize, with numerous runs from the adjacent bush, and our anticipation was high.
That night we searched, but the snouty beasts had other plans, so our group of three retired to our comfortable camp to enjoy a cup of tea around the fire before turning in.
Next day the plan was to collect a few game birds for the table too, with the 30-06! A few lucky shots later and a nice young guineafowl and francolin were in the bag. So in the tradition of naming the new rifle for it’s first kill, Hanga it is!

Kevin, you now have all the rifles you need to keep hunting Afrika; the double, and now the '06. I'm sure you have a suitable shotgun, and mebbe a personal "tool" for self defence. You are going to have a perfect Christmas.

No shotgun yet Geoff, but I am keeping an eye out.

Well done @Kevin Peacocke and 'Hanga'. Some days the critters just don't co-operate :E Shrug:
