Allure of the Ruger No1

Doesn’t appear to be a Ruger rear sight? You trade it out or custom 1/4 rib?
It’s the boddington series No. 1 “Kudu” so the rear sight is different. I have previously owned the cabelas anniversary edition in 300 H&H and there are subtle differences in the sights and stock.

I took my new (to me) .30-06 Ruger No. 1 with a S weight 24” barrel for a walk this weekend scouting in preparation for the upcoming Virginia deer season. I also had my .30-06 RSI along for the trip.

On a side note, I have been planting oak, fruit, and chestnut trees on our property for the last 15-20 years. Last year I had one chestnut tree with about three pods. This year I had multiple trees with many pods, as well as acorns and pears for the first time. The chestnuts did not last long.

I plant chestnut and oak trees from Nativ Nursery and Dunstan chestnut trees from Whitetail Hill Chestnuts. Many of the local Walmart stores carry the Whitetail Hill Chestnuts trees and late in the Spring planting season you can often get them at greatly discounted prices.

Newest addition to my No 1 family:
Ruger No 1B (circa 1974-1975) in .30-06, topped off with a Weaver El Paso steel tube K3 also circa early 1970’s.

Wood is nothing to write home about, but it has achieved that nice old orangish red that 50 year old No 1 stocks mellow out to…shoots pretty much point of aim anywhere from 50 to 265 yards with plain old 180 grain Remington Core Lokt, perfect hunting rifle!

I am, however, on the look out for a replacement red pad for this old guy. The one currently on it looks like an aggressive two year old used it for a teething ring!

View attachment 353557 As chronicled in another thread I too love the No 1 and have hunted with them extensively. In addition to those pictured above I also had a blues version in 458 Lott.
Very nice. I have not seen a stainless #1 topped with a sliver scope, handsome.

The Express rear sight is available as a part from Ruger.

Part is: 'Express sight - Ruger Hawkeye African'
Part No: D07725HM

I much prefer them, and had one fitted one to my 450 NE No. 1.

If anyone is interested in a new No. 1A Stainless in 308 Win, my local Cabelas (Allen, Texas) has one for $1,500.

Came that way when I bought it

Continuing the thread…
Ruger No 1B stainless/laminate in .450 Bushmaster being held up by a nice big bodied forkie during an exceptionally wet hunt!
Hornady Black 250 grain FTX helped in securing “chili on the hoof”- awesome performance, 75 yard shot in thick forest.

I posted a set of free Ruger #1 offset rings in the "Pay It Forward-Free" thread if any of you single shot fans need a set & have something you would like to offer in exchange.
