Has anyone ever re regulated a double O/U. My Berreta seems to have gone off the reservation with regard to its original regulated shots. If so what was the cost of such a job?

Here in the states, (no idea where you're from) there are several that can do a good job and from prior inquiries the cost is about 650 USD. Plus ammo.

If yours shot well before perhaps the barrels are loose from broken solder joints? Hold the detached barrels by the breech end and tap the front end with a plastic handle of a screw driver. They should ring like a bell. If it's a kind of dull sound they're loose.

Are you using the same lot number of powder for the loads or a different powder? Have you done anything different with the brand of ammo if you aren't loading your own?

Call Champlin Firearms in Enid, OK. Ask for J.J. Perradou and tell him your problem. He is from Europe and is excellent with this type of problem.

RECKLESS, let me ask you a couple of questions!

#1 have you recently installed a scope or changed to a different scope that weighs more or less that the scope that was on the rifle?

#2 Do you shoot factory ammo or do your re-load? If factory ammo have you changed to a different bullet weight or different brand with the same weight?

#3 As someone above asked have you changed powders or a different lott# ?

If the answer to any of these is "YES" I would look at these before re-regulating!

If indeed you need re-regulating, JJ at Champlin's is the best!

I agree with the above - I am not sure what the problem is. Has the regulation changed for a load which did work in it previously or are you having trouble duplicating the factory regulation?

Reckless,

I agree with others here that, J.J. Perodeau is an expert at regulating/re-regulating doubles.

The first double rifle I ever had was a brand new Merkel SxS in .375 H&H, about 11 or 12 years ago.

The right side chamber was evidently tight because it would flatten primers with the factory ammo that the paperwork said it was regulated for (Federal 300 grain round nose in those days).

Many times said primers would even pierce and extrude a tiny flange of metal into the firing pin hole, causing the rifle to be very difficult to open.

To ad insult to injury, it did not even throw the bullets from that specific ammunition especially close together from barrel to barrel / shot to shot.

I spoke with JJ about this and then sent it to him, instead of taking any chances with whatever goober that Merkel might have sent it to / "Roll of The Dice Gunsmithing Inc." or whomever.

Not sure what the re-regulation cost me back then, because I also had him claw mount it with a straight tube (2 & 1/2 power) scope.

Parts and labor for all the above were around a thousand bucks, not counting the scope which, I already had in my toybox.

After JJ cast his magic spell over the Merkel, it never gave me another stammer or hiccough and was quite accurate as well, quite worth every penny.

I tried to find any un-solder / re-solder evidence at the barrel/rib junctions but there was none.

If I ever have to have such as that done again, I will automatically call him first.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

Wow !

Mike, not doubting your information at all, just very surprised that the cost of re-regulating is, what appears to me, to be so low considering the work involved.

JJ is one of about three people in this country who I would let play with a double rifle. He has done at least half a dozen claw mounts and rings or rings for existing claw mounts for me over the years. He just reworked the hammer springs and triggers on a pre-war German guild rifle, and is currently working on mounts for a cape gun. Often a DR will love a load from each barrel but they may a mile apart. JJ will regulate the barrels to fit the loads. A real national (however French) treasure.

Paul, That's the price he quoted me a few years ago. It's probably gone up a bit since then.

It doesn't take long to do something when you know what you're doing.

Below is from JJ's service list
Regulation of barrel convergence

This one is a challenge: New barrels or 100 years old barrels? Originally regulated beautifully or not? For cordite or flake powder? The bullet weight and shape? The individual barrel accuracy? There is a few guide lines about it, but nothing is chiseled in stone. Considering the amount of parameters it would take a powerful computer to lay out the proper squeeze for a set of barrels, a load and a shooter. Then that computer will not solder as good as my yellow lab would. On the first try I satisfy 90% of my customers, and if your rifle doesn't perform the way it should I will regulate again (under guaranty).
$750.00 plus ammunition
