I’m trying to simplify things a bit by getting rid of some stuff. I got rid of my 260, 6.5, 7mm08. I kept my 243s and 308s and thinking about getting a 358. I got rid of my 25/06 and 280, and kept my 270s, 30/06s, 9.3x62s for now, and am building a couple 35 Whelens. I have a 300win I really like do I really need a 7mm mag? I think I could better let them go and get another 300win. Less brass, Less loaded ammo, less dies.

What do you guys think? I know you guys are all about more guns, but I’m sure I won’t have less guns just less calibers.

As long as I’m at it do I need a 22-250 if I have 223s and 243s?

You got a 30-06. Sell the rest and get a 375H&H or a 404 Jeffery if you’re feeling froggy. Done. You’re welcome.

Nope…you dont NEED a 7 mag…certainly no problem having one… but you have plenty of overlap with the other calibers to cover any game at any distance a 7 mag would typically be used at…

I don’t have the number of calibers you do, but I have a 7mag, as well as 308 and 300wm. I have recently been thinking my 300wm covers everything I would use the 7mag for, so maybe I should part ways with it and find something different. While not final, I was thinking 6.5PRC. That’s not your question though.

It seems there is a functional purpose to your question, is it worth keeping the 7mag in light of your other cartridges, specifically the 300wm. My opinion is those two calibers are so close to identical that there isn’t something one can do that the other can’t.

I'd stick with the 300WM and not get a 7RM. As above, it'll do more and there's probably a better bullet selection in .30 caliber.

I have a couple H&Hs, 2 375WBYs, 3 375Rums, and 2 416 Rigbys. So I probably got that covered. Lol Your point is valid however. If I got rid of the rest I could go on a couple trips.

A .300 will do anything a 7mag will do a little better.
I know I'd be better off with less calibers.
I used to do pretty well at that, I guess I got a little more affluent and started embiggening my congregation. :(

I started sorting brass I had been putting in containers after I shoot and realized something needed to go lol.

If you don’t have a 7mm then yes you do need one. You got rid of a lot of guns, I find this disturbing. I understand trying to ”simplify things“ or “trade up”, actually I don’t understand this. I look at guns like children, more is better. I have bought plenty of used guns and appreciate that someone would part with there precious objects. I have both a 7mm and 7RUM which is a serious ass kicking machine on both ends. Unless you reload, ammo for a RUM is unobtainable. Good luck with your search, there are several 7mm on Rock Island Auction that may be had for a good price. Please take this in the good humor it was intended.

I have a couple 700s in 7mm Mags that I think will get the ax. It is time for the children to leave the nest.

I’m definitely not the one to look toward for advice in this decision, I will just go to sleep now! Good luck

If you want to simplify and rationalise your needs fair enough.
If you have overlap it might be time to r sell if you get a fair price.
I have about 1 hunting rifle more than I need if I'm just trying to cover the basics but I couldn't decide which I would trade off if I had too.
Truth is I would have more of I was using them more.

Lol, I have been through the logic, the purge, and the re-acquisition processes. My vote would be, if I liked it and could half-ass rationalize / justify it, keep it. If I already had it, I would keep it. But, I do like the cartridge.
Overlap, I like. And easier to keep than regret and rebuild and/or rebuy.
With that said, I ask myself the same question about 300 Winchester magnums that I have. But, I recall previous purges and rebuys.

I have some of everything but like you it would be nice to simplify A bit. In my experience there is little you can not hunt with a .300 so go with it.
I have never been a fan of the .22-250. It is too small for me for deer and it tears up furbearing animals. I would just go with the .223. It has the most ammo availability.

Wife asks…. “Why do you have so many guns?”

“Well my dear, each is very unique and has a special purpose.”

“Those six over there all look the same, why don’t you sell one?”

“Because then I would only have five.”

If you are just trying to downsize or simplify your logistics on what you have and load for. Look at your reloading shelf and take an inventory, of bullets, powder, and brass. What do you have the most of. Say 30 cal equal # of brass keep the one with the best options (308, 30-06, 300 WM) Keep the 300 and get rid of the 308 30-06 along with the dies and don't look back. I recently did that woith 308, 30-06 300 H&H. I kept the H&H.

Downsize and go hunting. The 300 IMO is the way to go, nothing against .284's but seems that a good 30 does everything you need .
